Linda Kemp, an 84-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, is embracing a new chapter in her life by working part-time at her son’s law firm. Living below the poverty line, Kemp relies on a combination of Social Security and her son’s support to maintain her independence. Recently relocated to be closer to her family, she finds fulfillment in her role, which involves mailing letters for her son’s legal practice.

Kemp has a rich history as a caregiver, having raised seven children who now live in various parts of the world, including Australia and California. Her journey has not been without challenges. After her first marriage ended, she faced financial difficulties, relying on her husband for support while selling art to contribute to the household. Following their separation, she managed to purchase a home with the proceeds from their shared property, ultimately leading her to invest in real estate—a practice often referred to as flipping.

Now, Kemp has designed a modest home tailored to her needs and has taken significant steps towards sustainable living, including the installation of solar panels. She has always prioritized happiness over financial gain, believing that “money arguments can be the downfall of man.” After obtaining a degree in graphic design, she worked in that field until her 50s, developing software and honing her skills as an artist.

Despite her retirement, Kemp’s life took another turn about five years ago when her son, a practicing attorney, offered her a job. He proposed that she assist with the mailing duties at his firm, a role she accepted with enthusiasm. This position not only helps her stay financially afloat but also keeps her engaged and active.

A New Home and a New Community

Relocating to Jacksonville has provided Kemp with both challenges and opportunities. Moving from a more rural setting to a rapidly developing area, she is acclimatizing to her new surroundings. Although she resides in a house owned by her son, she manages the utilities and maintains the property. Kemp has taken on the responsibility of ensuring the yard is well-kept, adhering to community standards.

The law firm primarily handles DUI cases, and Kemp’s job involves sending letters to individuals who have been booked, offering legal services. “I enjoy it. It keeps me active,” she states. Working approximately 20 hours a week, she finds that the routine helps her maintain a sense of purpose. Her son compensates her with a monthly check, allowing her to manage her finances alongside her Social Security income.

Kemp’s role extends beyond her job; she also takes care of her three grandchildren, providing invaluable support to her son and daughter-in-law. “Once a month is the least I can do,” she quips, suggesting she would be willing to help more frequently.

Health Challenges and Future Aspirations

At 84, Kemp is mindful of her health, taking seven medications daily and staying active to maintain her well-being. Despite a recent injury that affected her wrist, she remains optimistic about her future. Many people are surprised to learn her age, often guessing she is in her 60s. With her mother having lived to 93, Kemp is determined to embrace life and aims for longevity.

As she reflects on her journey, Kemp acknowledges the need to assess what comes next. While she enjoys her part-time work, she also cherishes her creative pursuits. Whether through painting or jewelry making, she remains passionate about art and is contemplating further entrepreneurial endeavors. “It feels like starting all over again,” she remarks, capturing her sense of renewal.

Linda Kemp’s story highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of family support. As she navigates her new life in Jacksonville, her commitment to both her work and her family remains steadfast, proving that age is just a number when it comes to finding purpose and joy in life.
