Your HSA May Cover These 7 Surprising Wellness Devices
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are increasingly being recognized for their potential to cover a range of wellness devices beyond traditional medical expenses. According to Chris Byrd, senior vice president at WEX, a global commerce platform that administers HSAs and FSAs, this shift is changing how employees perceive their benefits. “These accounts aren’t just for emergencies anymore,” Byrd noted.
As consumers explore wellness products eligible for HSA and FSA coverage, several unexpected items come to light. It is essential to understand that some products may require a doctor’s note to qualify, emphasizing the need for medical necessity when considering these purchases.
Wellness Devices Covered by HSAs and FSAs
1. **Massage Guns**
Devices like the Therabody Theragun are eligible for HSA or FSA coverage, starting at approximately $200. The brand Caring Mill offers lower-cost options, including heated massage guns and a two-pack for convenience. Additionally, items such as vibrating foam rollers and cupping therapy tools paired with heat and vibration may also qualify.
2. **Oura Ring**
The Oura Ring, a popular smart ring for health tracking, can be purchased using HSA or FSA funds. Users can order directly from Oura and either use their accounts at checkout or submit for reimbursement later.
3. **Whoop Wearable**
The Whoop 4.0 and its successor, the Whoop 5.0, are both eligible for HSA and FSA coverage. These devices provide valuable insights into sleep and health metrics. Recent packages include a SuperKnit band and a 12-month membership, enhancing their appeal.
4. **Smart Blood Pressure Monitors**
Blood pressure monitors are available through HSA and FSA stores, with options like the Garmin Index BPM Smart Blood Pressure Monitor retailing for about $200. A more affordable alternative is the OMRON Evolv Wireless Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor, priced at around $76, which connects to smartphones for easy tracking.
5. **Chest Strap Heart Rate Monitors**
The Garmin HRM-Pro Plus chest strap heart rate monitor, praised for its battery life, is HSA and FSA-eligible. It connects seamlessly to smartphones and other fitness devices, while a more cost-effective version, the Garmin Heart Rate Monitor 200, is also available.
6. **Light Therapy Devices**
Various light therapy devices, including red light therapy LED masks from brands like Dr. Dennis Gross, may be covered by HSAs and FSAs. These products are often sought after for skincare improvement.
7. **Compression Boots**
Compression devices such as the Therabody JetBoots aim to reduce muscle pain and enhance recovery. Priced at $600 for the Prime model and $1,200 for the Pro Plus, these boots also incorporate vibration and red light therapy.
Understanding Eligibility and Differences between HSA and FSA
Byrd emphasizes the importance of understanding the eligibility criteria for HSA or FSA coverage. “Broadly speaking, eligibility is tied to use for treatment of a medical condition,” he explains. Products that are deemed to serve general health and wellness or cosmetic purposes typically do not qualify without medical justification.
For individuals looking to ensure their items are eligible, Byrd recommends consulting the HSA provider’s online dashboard or app.
The primary distinction between HSAs and FSAs lies in ownership and flexibility. An HSA is an individually owned account that remains with the individual even when changing jobs, while an FSA is employer-tied and often subject to a “use-it-or-lose-it” rule at the end of the plan year. Additionally, individuals must be enrolled in an HSA-qualified health insurance plan to participate in an HSA, while FSAs are compatible with any group health insurance plan.
Another notable difference is the investment potential of HSA funds. Byrd points out that HSA funds can be invested in mutual or index funds, allowing for tax-free growth over time, a feature not available with FSAs.
As consumers navigate the expanding landscape of wellness products, understanding the capabilities of HSAs and FSAs can empower them to make informed decisions about their health investments.
