The City of St. Joseph Health Department is organizing an event to observe International Overdose Awareness Day, aimed at commemorating individuals lost to overdose. Scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on August 31, 2023, the event will take place at the Christ Episcopal Church, located at 207 N 7th Street, and will provide a platform for community members to reflect on the impact of addiction.

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the state recorded its highest overdose death rate in 2022, with 2,180 overdose-related fatalities. This figure saw a decline in 2023, with the most recent report indicating 1,948 deaths. The event aims to raise awareness about this pressing issue while fostering a supportive community atmosphere.

The evening will commence with an official proclamation recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day, followed by a closing prayer and a circle of light to honor those who have lost their lives to overdose. Participants will have the opportunity to share their stories during an Open Mic session, where they can remember their loved ones and inspire hope for recovery.

In addition to the memorial activities, the event will feature educational booths that provide valuable information on addiction and recovery. Attendees can engage in memorial rock painting, symbolizing their loved ones, and receive free merchandise related to International Overdose Awareness. The distribution of Naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, will also be part of the event, along with information on tuition assistance for those pursuing a career as a Certified Peer Specialist.

This observance highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities in combatting addiction and the importance of collective remembrance and support. The St. Joseph Health Department encourages all community members to attend and participate in this significant event.
