NHL Captain Nick Foligno Takes Leave for Daughter’s Heart Surgery

Nick Foligno, captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, is taking a temporary leave of absence to support his daughter, Milana, as she undergoes another surgery related to her congenital heart disease. The announcement, made by the team in October 2025, highlights the family’s ongoing journey with Milana’s health challenges since her diagnosis shortly after birth in 2013.

Nick and his wife, Janelle, have become prominent advocates for childhood heart health, particularly in light of their daughter’s experiences. Milana was diagnosed with a heart defect just weeks after her birth, and she has since undergone two significant surgeries to address her condition. These life-altering events have inspired Janelle to write the children’s book, Dear Heart, published in 2018, which reflects their family’s journey and aims to provide comfort to other families facing similar challenges.

The Folignos established their media platform, Heart’s Playbook, in 2020 to share their daughter’s story and connect with other parents navigating serious health conditions. They explained their motivation through an Instagram post, stating, “This is us. We’re the Folignos. These kids you see are the driving force behind everything we do.” The platform serves as a resource for families seeking hope and guidance in difficult times.

In a 2021 interview, Janelle described her advocacy efforts as a “coping mechanism” during tough periods, emphasizing the importance of philanthropy in their lives. “My family and I have always been passionate about giving back to our communities,” she noted. “We are typically pretty private people, but if we can help people along the way, it will all be worthwhile.”

Milana underwent her first open-heart surgery on December 31, 2013, when she was just three weeks old. Her diagnosis of endocarditis in 2018, characterized by inflammation of the heart’s inner lining, further complicated her health journey. The Folignos have expressed immense gratitude to the medical professionals at Boston Children’s Hospital, where they made a $500,000 donation in 2016 to honor the staff who saved Milana’s life.

Reflecting on their experiences, Nick has stated that Janelle’s writing has provided therapeutic relief for their family. “She writes out of her emotions,” he explained during a 2018 interview. “There’s not a lot of literature for kids to prepare them for what they are about to face.”

As Milana prepares for her upcoming surgery, the family remains committed to sharing their story and supporting others. Janelle has often expressed the emotional rollercoaster they experience each November, marking significant anniversaries in Milana’s journey. “Despite the inevitable anxiousness, November brings me thankful for everything that has come our way,” she shared.
