New Mexico Allows COVID-19 Vaccines for All Ages Without Prescription

A new order from the New Mexico Department of Health enables health care providers and pharmacists to administer the latest version of COVID-19 vaccines to individuals aged six months and older without the need for a prescription. This standing order took effect on March 15, 2024, and aims to alleviate confusion regarding vaccine access that has persisted for over a week both in New Mexico and across the United States.
The recent state initiative emerged in response to inconsistent federal guidance, which has left many residents uncertain about their vaccination options. The Health Department has been advocating for all eligible individuals—including pregnant people—to stay current with their COVID-19 vaccinations to minimize the risk of severe illness.
Eliminating Barriers to Vaccination
In a statement regarding the new order, Gina DeBlassie, the Cabinet Secretary of the Department of Health, emphasized the importance of facilitating access to vaccinations. She noted, “We are clearing the way for New Mexicans who want the vaccine to get the vaccine. This standing order ensures that barriers don’t prevent people from protecting their health.”
The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to prioritizing public health and ensuring vaccinations are readily available through pharmacies. By simplifying the process, the department hopes to encourage higher vaccination rates, particularly as health officials continue to monitor the evolving pandemic landscape.
The order is part of a broader strategy to combat COVID-19 and its variants, which remain a public health concern. The New Mexico Department of Health continues to update its protocols and guidance in line with new developments and recommendations from federal health authorities.
As this situation evolves, further updates will be provided to inform residents about their vaccination options and any new guidelines from health officials. The emphasis remains on protecting the health of the community while navigating the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic.
