Close to 400 participants gathered at Borderland State Park in Easton on Saturday, October 14, 2023, for the inaugural “Walk for Alopecia.” The event aimed to raise both awareness and funds for research into alopecia, an autoimmune condition that leads to hair loss on the scalp, face, and other areas of the body.

Among those who attended were Lauren and Robert Nadeau, who organized the event with their son, Matty, in mind. Matty began experiencing hair loss at a very young age. “Matty started losing his hair when he was not even 3 years old,” Lauren Nadeau shared. “He used to have patchy alopecia.” Their personal connection to the condition fueled their motivation to support the cause.

The walk not only marked the first such event in Boston but also achieved remarkable fundraising success. According to Lauren Nadeau, the organization raised an impressive amount, starting the day with a total of $62,000, excluding funds from raffles, same-day donations, or merchandise sales. “We want this money to feed into the research,” she noted. “They have immunosuppressants for over the age of 12, and people are growing new hair if that’s their choice.”

Participants shared their own experiences with alopecia, fostering a sense of community among those affected by the condition. Stories of resilience and support echoed throughout the park, highlighting the emotional impact of the disease.

The funds raised during the event will contribute to ongoing research efforts aimed at better understanding alopecia and developing treatments for those affected. As Lauren emphasized, the community’s support is essential for driving progress in this field.

For those interested in contributing to the cause, donations can still be made through the organization’s website. The enthusiasm and commitment displayed at the “Walk for Alopecia” reflect a growing awareness of the challenges faced by individuals living with this condition. As the event concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of hope and determination to advocate for further research and support.
