Youths Engage in Aviation Education at National Championship Air Races
The National Championship Air Races and Air Show (NCAR) welcomed local youths to the Roswell Air Center for an educational experience this year. For the first time, school field trips provided students an opportunity to connect aviation with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles, underscoring the essential knowledge required for aircraft travel. The event, produced by the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA), relocated to Roswell following nearly six decades of races at the Reno-Stead Airport in northern Nevada due to rising insurance costs and spatial constraints.
With a population of nearly 63,700 in Chaves County, including over 47,000 residents in Roswell, the expansive Roswell Air Center spans over 5,000 acres. This site once housed the historic Walker Air Force Base, which was a pivotal military training location until its closure in June 1967. Established as an Army Air Corps flying school in September 1941, Walker played a vital role in aviation training and research.
Engaging Activities Foster Future Aviation Professionals
This year’s NCAR activities utilized only a portion of the airport’s vast space, allowing for a larger race course that many pilots appreciated. The event organizers prioritized the inclusion of a STEM area to cultivate future aviation professionals. Students had the chance to learn about flight principles and engage in hands-on activities, such as creating paper airplanes to test their gliding abilities. The Roswell Museum and Leprino Foods led these educational initiatives.
In a dedicated section, students explored innovative technology by operating small robot cars. Matthew Tyrrell, a mechanical engineering graduate student from New Mexico Tech, engaged with high schoolers, demonstrating the vehicles. “Fun activities like this help draw students in,” he remarked, showcasing the interactive learning environment.
Among the students, Christian Fry, a senior at Goddard High School, expressed excitement over the diverse aircraft on display, including racing, military, historic, and commercial planes. He described the experience as “kinda cool,” reflecting the enthusiasm present at the event.
Scholarships Promote Aviation Careers
RARA, a nonprofit organization, has a history of sponsoring scholarships for students in Reno and is expanding its efforts in southeast New Mexico. By establishing similar aviation-related scholarships, RARA aims to support students interested in pursuing careers in aviation, such as mechanics and piloting. This initiative encourages local youths to explore educational opportunities in an industry vital for economic growth.
The connection between education and aviation is now more pronounced than ever, as events like NCAR foster interest in STEM fields. With the Roswell Air Center facilitating these experiences, the future of aviation education looks promising for the region.
