Study Reveals the Smartest U.S. States Based on IQ and Education

A recent study has identified the U.S. states that excel in IQ, education, and literacy. This comprehensive analysis highlights the states where educational opportunities and intellectual capacity intersect, shedding light on areas for improvement. Researchers evaluated all 50 states, utilizing data from the U.S. Census Bureau, World Population Review, and the National Center for Education Statistics. Each state received a Smartness Score ranging from 0 to 100, based on four factors: average IQ (40%), education levels (35%), literacy (15%), and median household income (10%).
Lev Fomchenkoc, CEO of Cosmic Nootropic, commissioned the research to explore geographic variations in intelligence. “Intelligence develops through education, mental stimulation, and access to resources. This study shows us which states are creating the conditions for their populations to excel intellectually,” Fomchenkoc explains.
Top Ten Smartest States in the U.S.
The ranking reveals a diverse range of states, each contributing uniquely to the overall intelligence landscape.
10. Washington (77.3)
Washington ranks tenth, bolstered by a high literacy rate and a median household income of nearly $95,000. The presence of technology hubs, such as Seattle and Redmond, attracts a well-educated workforce, while significant public school funding supports early education.
9. Montana (78.9)
Montana demonstrates that intelligence is not exclusive to urban centers. With an average IQ of 103.4 and around 35% of adults holding bachelor’s degrees, the state excels in several areas. The robust public education system and community-focused universities contribute to its high performance.
8. Colorado (79.0)
Colorado’s educated populace—almost 45% with college degrees—along with a vibrant economy, secures its eighth position. The state’s outdoor lifestyle, combined with prestigious research institutions like CU Boulder, fosters both cognitive and creative strengths among its residents.
7. Connecticut (79.3)
Connecticut continues its tradition of academic excellence, with over 41% of residents holding degrees and a median income exceeding $90,000. The presence of esteemed institutions such as Yale University reinforces the state’s commitment to intellectual development.
6. Maine (79.9)
Despite its smaller population, Maine excels with strong literacy rates and an average IQ of 103.4. The availability of local libraries and a focus on community education illustrate that smaller states can achieve significant intellectual outcomes.
5. North Dakota (80.4)
North Dakota achieves a high average IQ of 103.8, although it has a lower degree attainment rate of 32%. Its emphasis on technical training and practical problem-solving, particularly in agriculture and energy sectors, highlights how intelligence can flourish beyond conventional educational settings. Fomchenkoc notes, “Formal education is important, but hands-on problem solving and technical training also build cognitive ability.”
4. Minnesota (87.9)
With robust school systems and a culture of civic engagement, Minnesota ranks fourth. Nearly 39% of its residents have college degrees, and the state’s literacy rates are among the highest in the nation. Major research universities and innovative companies attract talent, solidifying its reputation as a center for intellectual growth.
3. Vermont (90.0)
Vermont’s educational success is attributed to small class sizes and strong community schools. The state boasts an average IQ of 103.8 and a degree attainment rate of 42.6%. Fomchenkoc emphasizes that “you don’t need the highest income levels to achieve strong cognitive outcomes,” pointing to Vermont as evidence that quality education can triumph over mere financial resources.
2. Massachusetts (90.2)
Massachusetts stands out as the home of prestigious institutions like Harvard and MIT, securing the second spot overall. It leads in both IQ, with an average of 104.3, and degree attainment at 46.6%. The state’s median income of $99,858 coupled with a rich academic culture makes it an intellectual powerhouse. Fomchenkoc asserts, “Areas with strong universities not only educate students but also create communities where lifelong learning becomes part of the culture.”
1. New Hampshire (93.6)
Topping the list is New Hampshire, which achieves the highest Smartness Score in the nation. With an average IQ of 104.2, a college-educated population nearing 40%, and a median income of $96,838, the Granite State exemplifies a balanced environment where education and opportunity reinforce each other. Fomchenkoc states, “Strong education systems provide the foundation for cognitive development throughout life. When states invest in quality schools and make higher education accessible, you see the results.”
This study not only highlights the intellectual strengths of various states but also serves as a reminder of the importance of investing in education and resources to foster cognitive development. As states strive to improve their educational systems, understanding these rankings may guide future policies aimed at enhancing the intellectual capabilities of their populations.
