On Monday, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) announced the results of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) at an event held at Ottoson Middle School in Arlington. The announcement revealed that while many districts are still struggling to return to pre-pandemic academic performance, Sizer School has regained its footing. The North Central Charter Essential School is one of only 13 districts in Massachusetts to recover academic performance in both English Language Arts and Mathematics for grades 3 to 8.

Education leaders expressed concern over the overall recovery, stating that almost all districts remain below the educational benchmarks set before the COVID-19 pandemic. In stark contrast, Sizer School has demonstrated exceptional progress, with students performing above pre-pandemic levels. During the event, DESE Commissioner Pedro Martinez highlighted this achievement, acknowledging the importance of engaging families and tailoring learning experiences to individual student needs. He noted that fostering joy and project-based learning is essential, rather than relying on uninspired, test-focused instruction.

Recognition for Resilience and Excellence

Secretary of Education Dr. Patrick Tutwiler also praised Sizer School and the other districts making significant gains, stating, “We know our educators and students can do great things when all students are welcomed to school and attend classes every day. I have long suggested that recovery from the pandemic will be a process, not an event. These are signals that the interventions and supports we have been scaling are beginning to move the needle.”

This recognition at the statewide event emphasizes Sizer’s resilience and educational leadership. The school’s effectiveness stems from its commitment to personalized learning, high expectations, and collaboration with the community. “To be named among the 13 districts reclaiming pre-pandemic performance in both core subjects is a tremendous honor,” said Dr. Marc Gosselin, Executive Director of Sizer School. “This achievement reflects the relentless focus and effort by our students and our expert faculty who truly know every student and teach them well. At Sizer, our approach to learning is centered in ‘Think. Care. Act.’ This is not just a motto; it’s how we partner together to ensure every student thrives.”

Looking Forward: Expansion and Opportunities

Sizer School shows no signs of slowing down. The institution is poised to continue building on its collaborative culture and strong community relationships while delivering quality education to its students. Exciting plans are in place to expand its Early College High program and strengthen partnerships with Fitchburg State University, maximizing the benefits of proximity to the university.

Currently, Sizer School is accepting applications for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year, with the application period for the 2026-2027 school year set to begin on November 1, 2025. As a public charter school serving grades 7 through 12, Sizer School continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence in education.
