Reflecting on Local History: The Educator Supply and Post Office
The history of local commerce in Mitchell, South Dakota, is marked by two significant buildings: the former Post Office and the Educator Supply building. The Post Office, constructed in 1909, served the community until 1962, when a new facility was established. Meanwhile, the Educator Supply building, located at 311 N. Lawler, has its roots dating back to 1894.
Founded by Harry Bras, Educator Supply specialized in providing school supplies and operated as a corporation. In 1908, the business was purchased by L.A. Pope and F.L. Ransom, who expanded its reach throughout the territories of South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. The company not only distributed educational materials but also engaged in printing and publishing services.
The Educator Supply business flourished for decades, becoming a key player in the regional market. It was recognized for its comprehensive inventory of school and office supplies, catering to the needs of educational institutions and businesses alike. In 1979, the company was sold to McLeod’s Printing, prompting a relocation from its original building.
The legacy of these two structures is preserved by the efforts of the Mitchell Area Historical Society, which highlights their significance in the local economic landscape. Researcher Pam Range emphasizes the importance of understanding the historical context of these establishments, as they represent the evolution of commerce in the region.
As the community reflects on its past, the stories of the Post Office and Educator Supply serve as reminders of the ongoing development and resilience of local businesses. These buildings not only house memories of the past but also symbolize the growth and adaptability of the Mitchell area over the years.
