Ravenna Superintendent Greg Helmer Announces 2026 Retirement

Superintendent Greg Helmer of Ravenna Public Schools has announced his plan to retire on June 30, 2026, marking the end of a significant chapter in the district’s leadership. In a statement released on October 13, Joshua Emery, President of the Ravenna Board of Education, expressed gratitude for Helmer’s contributions, highlighting his “unwavering leadership” and the profound impact he has had on both schools and the community.
Helmer, who has served as superintendent since 2019, has been instrumental in transforming Ravenna Public Schools, particularly during a period of financial instability. Emery noted that Helmer played a crucial role in rescuing the district from “significant financial hardship and the threat of state takeover.” His tenure included the development of a comprehensive District Strategic Plan, aimed at fostering a culture of shared vision, accountability, and excellence within the community.
During his career, Helmer has worked in five school districts within Muskegon County. A graduate of Calvin University and Western Michigan University, he expressed deep appreciation for the educational profession, stating, “Education is an emotionally exhausting profession, but incredibly rewarding.” His retirement aligns with that of his wife, Carrie Helmer, who retired from public education in June after a substantial 31-year teaching career at Mona Shores.
Emery noted that Helmer’s advance notice of his retirement allows the Board of Education to strategically plan for his successor. In March, a subcommittee was formed to develop a detailed succession plan, which included input from external experts. At the recent Board meeting, members unanimously expressed their intent to appoint Justin Wilson, the current principal of Ravenna High School, as the next superintendent.
Wilson has held the principal position since 2018 and has a diverse background in education that includes roles as an assistant principal, athletic director, teacher, and coach. He is a graduate of Grand Valley State University and is actively involved in the community through the Ravenna Community Educational Foundation as well as the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals.
Before the official Board vote on his appointment, Wilson will present a formal entry plan at a Board meeting in 2026. An open house will also be organized for the community to engage with him. If approved, Wilson is set to officially assume the role of superintendent on July 1, 2026.
Helmer expressed confidence in Wilson’s capabilities, indicating that the next superintendent was already within the district. “I am thrilled to be involved with a detailed succession plan and onboarding the next Superintendent,” he stated, reflecting on a career filled with gratitude and commitment to education.
As Ravenna Public Schools prepares for this transition, the community can look forward to the continued leadership and vision that Wilson is expected to bring to the district.
