NEWSWELL and Freedom Forum Launch First Amendment Academy
A new educational initiative has been launched to enhance understanding of the First Amendment rights in the United States. The collaboration between the Freedom Forum and NEWSWELL at Arizona State University (ASU) has resulted in the establishment of the First Amendment Academy, designed to provide free and accessible educational resources to the public. This innovative program aims to deepen awareness of the constitutional rights guaranteed by the First Amendment.
The First Amendment Academy offers a series of 15 interactive, self-guided courses alongside 25 short quizzes focusing on the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. Each course, lasting between 10 and 20 minutes, utilizes a blend of videos and interactive elements to encourage critical thinking and engagement. Participants who complete the courses earn digital badges that signify their knowledge of these essential legal principles.
Engaging Learning Experience
Founded in 1991 by Al Neuharth, the Freedom Forum is a nonpartisan foundation committed to the promotion of First Amendment freedoms through education and civic engagement. The launch of the Academy represents a significant expansion of their efforts, enabling a wider audience to access interactive and engaging educational content. According to Jan Neuharth, chair and CEO of Freedom Forum, “This initiative is a step forward in our mission to educate, engage, and inspire people about their First Amendment freedoms.”
The collaboration with NEWSWELL, an ASU affiliate dedicated to supporting local journalism, ensures that high-quality content reaches diverse audiences. While the Freedom Forum provides trusted educational material, NEWSWELL enhances the initiative with its extensive media network. ASU’s Learning Enterprise contributes its expertise in online learning, creating a comprehensive platform that supports civic education.
Nicole Carroll, executive director of NEWSWELL, emphasized the organization’s commitment to connecting news consumers with lifelong learning opportunities. “NEWSWELL will embed links to these classes and quizzes in news stories that touch on First Amendment issues, giving readers a chance for deeper understanding,” she stated. This integration will facilitate a richer engagement with the material, enabling individuals to explore their rights in relation to current events.
Empowering Civic Understanding
The First Amendment Academy aligns with ASU’s Charter, which emphasizes the institution’s responsibility for the economic and social well-being of the communities it serves. By providing free access to these resources, the Academy opens doors for learners of all ages to improve their understanding of civic rights and responsibilities.
“This is a learning experience about belonging as much as it is about rights,” remarked Marco Serrato, vice president of ASU’s Learning Enterprise. He highlighted the importance of empowering individuals with the knowledge necessary to engage confidently in public life, which is crucial for a healthy democracy.
The First Amendment Academy is now available to the public at freedomforum.org/first-amendment-academy. Through this collaboration, the Freedom Forum, NEWSWELL, and ASU are working together to foster a well-informed citizenry capable of exercising and defending their constitutional rights.
