New Trier High School is considering a series of new course proposals that could enhance educational opportunities for students. During a recent Board of Education meeting, five proposals were presented, which include plans for internships at local schools, a personal trainer certification program, and the introduction of three new Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The board is expected to vote on these proposals at their meeting in December 2023.

Chimille Tillery, the assistant superintendent for teaching and instruction, highlighted that these initiatives aim to create new opportunities tailored to student interests and needs. “This is about new opportunities for students, meeting student interests and student needs, and providing access and opportunity to rich coursework,” she stated.

If approved, a semester-long teaching internship could allow students to gain practical experience in partner elementary and middle schools as early as the 2027-2028 school year. Additionally, a semester-long personal training class, developed in collaboration with the American Council on Exercise, would prepare students to obtain ACE’s Personal Trainer certification by spring 2027.

The proposals also include expanding AP offerings for students in the Integrated Global Studies School (IGSS). This program, which serves New Trier juniors and seniors, could allow students to take AP Seminar and AP Research courses. This would mark the first time these specific AP courses are offered at the school.

Tillery explained that the IGSS curriculum aligns closely with the inquiry-based approach of AP Seminar, making this transition a natural fit rather than a significant shift in teaching style. Board member Sally Tomlinson expressed her support for introducing more semester-long courses, which may provide students with greater flexibility in their studies.

Another aspect of the proposals involves allowing students enrolled in the existing post-colonial literature class to take the AP Literature exam. This long-standing senior offering focuses on contemporary works from diverse regions, including Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Students read classic texts like Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” alongside modern works such as Jamaica Kincaid’s “Annie John.”

The upcoming vote on these proposals will play a critical role in shaping the future academic landscape for New Trier students, potentially providing enhanced pathways for college credit and career preparation. If approved, these new courses and programs will significantly broaden the scope of educational opportunities at New Trier High School.
