Mighty Writers El Futuro Kennett Empowers Youth with Holistic Support

Mighty Writers El Futuro Kennett, located at 121 Willow St, Toughkenamon, PA, has evolved significantly since its inception in 2019. As an extension of a Philadelphia-based organization, it provides a vibrant environment for children to engage in bilingual after-school writing workshops and receive personalized academic support. Under the leadership of Yakquelin Garduno, Senior Director for the past two years, the organization has broadening its focus to address the diverse needs of the Hispanic community in the area.
In a recent interview, Garduno highlighted how Mighty Writers has adapted its services to offer more than just writing workshops. Recognizing the essential needs of families, the organization has implemented a client-choice food pantry, allowing families to access fresh produce, meat, and dairy on a weekly basis. “The Hispanic culture likes to cook. They start with whole foods and aren’t familiar with serving food to their families from canned goods,” Garduno explained. The pantry’s success has been bolstered by support from the Chester County Food Bank, which provides essential supplies.
With the new school year underway, after-school programming is set to begin on September 8, 2023. Elementary students will learn to express themselves in both their native language and English, while also engaging in artistic projects that celebrate their Latino heritage. The curriculum incorporates essential social-emotional skills, including mindfulness and empathy, aimed at fostering well-rounded individuals.
Additionally, a “Mommy and Me” program will resume on Tuesday afternoons from 14:00 to 15:00, offering a supportive environment for mothers to share parenting experiences and discuss healthy practices. This initiative underscores Mighty Writers’ commitment to building strong community ties.
The organization also recognizes the importance of preparing high school students for their futures. A five-week College Prep Program is available for Hispanic students from grades nine to twelve. Garduno notes that many of these students come from families where parents did not attend college, making the program a vital resource for navigating the complexities of higher education.
Addressing the issue of disengagement among local youth, Mighty Writers has launched the “Mighty Teens Program.” This initiative targets young men aged 13 to 19 who have been observed hanging out in the neighborhood instead of attending school. Collaborating with Migrant Education, the program focuses on English language instruction alongside mental health and career development resources.
Mighty Writers is also introducing students to trades through a short course that highlights various craft opportunities. This approach aims to equip participants with practical skills that can lead to sustainable employment in the future.
The organization’s holistic approach to youth development reflects its commitment to nurturing the whole child. Garduno, who grew up in the same neighborhood, understands the challenges faced by the youth and is driven to provide alternatives that guide them towards realizing their potential. “It is self-gratifying to see the progress the students make in a short period of time and how much their families want their children to succeed,” she stated.
