Lynn Schools Receive State Support for $35 Million Repair Project
The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) has approved three significant repair projects for Lynn Public Schools, totaling an estimated cost of approximately **$35 million**. The initiative aims to enhance facilities and improve the learning environment for students across the district.
At **Ford Elementary School**, the project will focus on replacing all windows and exterior doors. According to **Michael Donovan**, Director of Capital Projects for the City, the estimated cost for this specific upgrade is **$3 million**.
In a separate project, **Lynn Classical High School** will see the majority of its roof replaced. About **15%** of the roof was previously repaired three years ago due to persistent leaks. The comprehensive roof replacement is estimated to cost **$8 million**.
Another pivotal project involves the **Lynn Vocational Technical Institute**, where the outdated boilers will be replaced with more sustainable heat pumps. This transition is part of a broader effort to electrify the heating system. The city has secured a **$5 million** grant from the **Massachusetts Clean Energy Center** and is currently applying for an additional **$10 million** grant from the **Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources**.
“The heating system is currently based on forced hot water, making it ideal for electrification,” Donovan remarked. “We are preparing to transition to greener solutions, and every bit of funding will assist us in this endeavor.”
The next phase requires the city to collaborate with the MSBA on a Schematic Design Study. Notably, the MSBA will reimburse the city **80%** of the costs associated with each project.
Mayor **Jared C. Nicholson** expressed gratitude for the ongoing partnership with the MSBA, stating, “There is a significant need for new and rehabilitated buildings in our district, and we want to explore all options for funding.”
Superintendent of Schools **Molly Cohen** added, “As we strive to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for all students, the quality of our school buildings plays an important role in those efforts. We appreciate the support of the city and the MSBA in our efforts to upgrade our buildings.”
These projects not only aim to improve the physical infrastructure of Lynn Public Schools but also to foster a more effective learning environment for students, ensuring that the educational needs of the community are met.
