LTUSD Board Advances Student Success and Sustainability Initiatives
The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board of Education convened on October 9, 2025, to discuss significant developments regarding student learning, sustainability efforts, and safety protocols within the district. The meeting highlighted various initiatives aimed at enhancing educational resources and ensuring the well-being of students and staff.
Focus on Student Learning and Achievement
During the meeting, the Board approved the 2025–26 Certification of Standards-Aligned Instructional Materials, a crucial step to guarantee that all students have access to current and high-quality textbooks and educational resources. Principals Hether Hart from Meyers Elementary and Justin Zunino from South Tahoe High School presented their School Plans for Student Achievement. Their plans emphasize curriculum development, student support, and professional growth for educators.
Dr. Alan Reeder shared key insights from the fall i-Ready assessment data for students in grades K–8, which focuses on reading and math. This data will inform instructional planning, aiming to help students achieve grade-level proficiency by spring.
Enhancing Safety and Emergency Preparedness
The Board reviewed updates to the School Site Safety Plans for the upcoming academic year, which now incorporate adaptations for students with disabilities. New initiatives include opioid prevention measures and life-saving response protocols for students in grades 7–12. The updated plans also address responses to violent or unlawful activities and outline instructional continuity strategies in the event of significant disruptions.
Representatives from Barton Health introduced “Stop the Bleed” kits for each school site, further enhancing the district’s emergency preparedness. These kits aim to equip staff and students with the tools needed to respond effectively in crisis situations.
Energy and Sustainability Initiatives
A presentation by Veregy, an energy services firm, outlined proposed projects that align with LTUSD’s commitment established in the 2020/2021-18 Board Resolution. This plan focuses on improving energy efficiency, promoting clean energy, and achieving carbon neutrality across the district. Proposed upgrades include enhancements to solar energy systems, lighting, heating systems, and smart controls.
The anticipated energy savings from these initiatives could reach approximately $996,200 annually, supported by federal Investment Tax Credits (ITC) and Net Energy Metering (NEM) 1.0 incentives. The Board will vote on this proposal on October 23, 2025.
District Operations and Communication Updates
Chief Business Officer Kelly Buttery reported on efforts to align LTUSD’s records retention procedures with guidelines from the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO). This move aims to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs. Public Information Officer Teresa Schow provided updates on communication strategies, announcing plans for a new LTUSD website, expected to launch by March 2026.
Celebrating Success and Community Engagement
The Board celebrated the success of the 2025 Fund Our Future campaign, which exceeded its goal of 90% completion for Family Income Survey forms. This achievement could potentially secure up to $500,000 in additional funding for LTUSD schools, demonstrating a collaborative effort across the district.
Board members reflected on recent community events, such as the Homecoming Parade and a Community Conversation on Bike Safety, highlighting the strong partnerships LTUSD maintains within the community. Student Board Member Arya Saini took a moment to commend the football team on their recent homecoming victory. She also noted that she and fellow Student Board Member Miri Lucksinger will present at the upcoming California School Boards Association Annual Education Conference in Sacramento this December.
The next regular meeting of the LTUSD Board of Education is scheduled for October 23, 2025. For those interested in reviewing the discussions from this meeting, a recording is available on YouTube.
