Elyria Library’s Watercolor Wednesdays Inspire Creativity and Community
The Elyria Public Library System’s South Branch hosted its monthly Watercolor Wednesdays class on January 28, 2024, inviting participants of all ages to explore their artistic talents. Led by Elizabeth Klanac, the assistant librarian at the South Branch, the class aims to teach attendees the fundamentals of watercolor painting while encouraging creativity.
Klanac emphasized the challenges of mastering watercolor, describing it as “one of the hardest mediums to master.” She noted the class has developed a strong sense of community, with many participants returning regularly since its inception over a year ago. “The thing about watercolor is that it’s a very delicate thing, but these women have been together for a while now,” Klanac explained.
Participants are encouraged to tap into their creativity without the pressure of a strict format. Klanac introduces elements of color and occasionally offers themed projects based on the season. Attendees can draw inspiration from watercolor prints provided during the class or create their own unique designs.
Fostering Creativity and Connection
The themes explored by participants vary widely, encompassing seasonal motifs, animals, and natural landscapes. Klanac emphasizes the importance of maintaining an open mind while painting, allowing individuals to transform blank canvases into personal expressions of art.
“A lot of the women come in here, and they have no experience; it’s how we all start,” Klanac remarked. She encourages participants to overcome the intimidation often associated with starting a new artistic endeavor. “The white paper is so intimidating, and I want them to be inspired by what appeals to them; there’s no wrong way to paint,” she added.
The social aspect of Watercolor Wednesdays also plays a significant role in its appeal. Participants often share materials and tips, fostering an encouraging environment where friendships can flourish. Klanac, with her background in art, finds joy in watching attendees interact and support one another in their creative journeys.
“Those who join the class are not required to have any prior experience with watercolor painting,” Klanac noted. All necessary materials are provided, although participants are welcome to bring their own supplies if they prefer.
Join the Artistic Community
For individuals interested in participating, Watercolor Wednesdays offers a welcoming atmosphere that promotes both artistic expression and socialization. Klanac encourages a fearless approach to painting, urging guests to embrace their creativity and think outside the box.
“I love it; I want them to be creative,” she said. “I think this is a very encouraging atmosphere.”
