East Grand Forks Schools Explore AI’s Role in Education
EAST GRAND FORKS — Leaders from the East Grand Forks Public Schools are cautiously examining the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Superintendent Kevin Grover emphasized that AI, particularly large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, can act as a “time-saver” and promote a “deeper level of thinking.” However, he stressed the need for a careful and gradual introduction of this technology to students.
The popularity of AI tools has surged dramatically, with ChatGPT becoming the most downloaded app on the app store for seven consecutive months from March to September 2025. Grover noted that the increasing normalization of AI necessitates that schools guide students on its “proper use.” He cautioned that the educational sector must adapt to these changes, likening the situation to past technological innovations that have reshaped learning. “Just like any invention that’s come out that has affected our lives, there’s a learning curve,” Grover stated.
Currently, the East Grand Forks School District has no formal policies regarding AI usage among students or staff, and access to AI tools is restricted on all student devices. Both Grover and Jill Meulebroeck, the district’s technological integrationist, expressed a desire to educate students about responsible AI use. However, they acknowledged the need for more familiarity with the technology and guidance from state authorities before implementing educational programs.
“Not educating students on the possibilities and boundaries of AI technology could be an injustice,” Grover commented. He highlighted the importance of preparing students for the real world, stating, “If some kid walked out of here this year, now knowing anything about AI, you’d almost go ‘did you miss the boat?’”
While both Grover and Meulebroeck recognize the advantages of AI as a learning tool, they also pointed out potential challenges. Meulebroeck observed that teachers occasionally face issues with students using AI dishonestly. “It’s not going anywhere. It’s how we work with it, not against it,” she remarked, reinforcing the notion that embracing AI is essential rather than avoiding it.
In the context of educational practices, Grover believes that integrating AI can enhance student learning. “It’s gonna have to get into the educational process sooner or later,” he said. The goal is to facilitate deeper thinking across subjects such as math, science, and English, ultimately striving for a more profound educational experience than what has been provided in the past.
Moreover, Grover sees potential benefits for staff as well, particularly in light of the ongoing workforce shortages in education. “I think it actually has potential to be a time-saving tool,” he stated, emphasizing that AI could assist teachers, administrators, and support staff in their daily tasks.
Meulebroeck added that when training staff to use AI effectively, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of verifying information. She introduced the “80/20” rule, where AI can provide around 80% of required information, but it remains the responsibility of educators to ensure the accuracy of that content.
Despite the efficiencies that AI could bring, Grover reaffirmed the indispensable role of teachers in public education. “I don’t see how it replaces the teacher,” he stated, addressing concerns that AI could supplant human educators. He acknowledged that while AI may have a place in some areas, the need for dedicated teachers and staff will endure in the public education system.
As East Grand Forks Public Schools navigate the complexities of AI integration, the district remains committed to fostering an educational environment that prepares students for a technology-driven future while upholding the value of traditional teaching methods.
