Cherokee Nation Launches Innovative Language Dictionary App
On December 9, 2023, leaders from the Cherokee Nation and members of the community gathered at the Durbin Feeling Language Center in Tahlequah to launch a new Cherokee Language Dictionary app. This digital tool aims to support the revitalization and learning of the Cherokee language, integrating advanced learning features tailored to a diverse group of users.
Enhancing Language Learning
The app, developed in collaboration with Kiwa Digital Ltd., offers a range of features designed to engage learners of all ages. These include audio pronunciations, interactive quizzes, and user-friendly navigation. By providing these resources, the Cherokee Nation is promoting not just language learning but also cultural heritage.
During the unveiling, Chuck Hoskin Jr., Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, emphasized the importance of language preservation. He stated, “The Cherokee language is a vital part of our identity. This app is a step forward in ensuring that future generations can connect with our culture and history.”
Community Engagement and Future Goals
The launch event drew significant community interest, with many attendees eager to explore the app’s capabilities. Language speakers and educators were particularly enthusiastic, recognizing the app as a valuable tool for both formal education and casual learning.
The Cherokee Nation plans to continually update the app with new content and features based on user feedback. This adaptive approach aims to create a dynamic learning environment, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of users. The strategy aligns with broader efforts by Indigenous communities worldwide to revitalize their languages through technology.
Community members expressed excitement about the potential impact of the app. Mary Thompson, a local language teacher, noted, “This app will help bridge the gap for many of our younger generations who are keen to learn but may not have access to traditional classes.”
