A tentative agreement has been reached between the Anchorage School District (ASD) and the Anchorage Education Association (AEA), paving the way for a new contract that will significantly impact the district’s educators. The proposed contract spans three years, commencing on July 1, 2026, and concluding on June 30, 2029.

According to a joint statement released by ASD, the agreement addresses crucial aspects such as compensation and working conditions for approximately 2,800 educators. If ratified by AEA members and subsequently approved by the Anchorage School Board, the contract will include a salary increase and enhancements to employer health contributions.

The new contract also incorporates over 20 language articles aimed at improving the working environment for ASD educators. Additionally, there is a provision for a temporary extension of the previous contract, which expired on June 30, 2025, to ensure continuity until the new agreement takes effect.

“This contract is historic for Anchorage educators,” stated AEA President Christi Sitz. She emphasized that competitive wages and benefits are essential tools for retaining current teachers and attracting new talent to the community. The focus, she noted, is on providing students with the best educators in fully staffed schools equipped with necessary resources.

ASD Superintendent Dr. Jharrett Bryantt acknowledged the challenges faced in reaching this agreement during a time of rising costs and budget pressures. “Our teachers are the heart of this district, and student success begins in their classrooms,” he said, highlighting the importance of this contract for educational outcomes.

A ratification vote for the agreement is anticipated later this month, which will allow AEA members to formally express their support or opposition. Should the members approve the contract, the Anchorage School Board plans to consider it in early February.

The agreement represents a significant step towards enhancing the educational landscape in Anchorage, providing both stability and support for educators who are key to student success. Further updates will follow as the ratification process unfolds.
