Allentown School District Launches Urgent Food Drive for Families

Editorial

on

An emergency food drive is now underway to support families within the Allentown School District amid disruptions caused by the government shutdown and interruptions to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The initiative, which runs until November 14, 2023, seeks both non-perishable food items and monetary donations to assist those in need.

Over 91% of the district’s 16,300 students are facing economic hardship, with nearly 98% qualifying for free or reduced-price meals. The district has set a goal to collect 20,000 non-perishable items. Donations can be made at any school building or the district administration center.

Monetary contributions are being accepted through the Allentown School District Foundation’s donation page, which can be accessed at tinyurl.com/ASDEmergencyFoodDrive.

Most Needed Items and Community Support

The drive emphasizes the need for specific food and personal care items, including:

– Canned soups and stews (pull-top lids preferred)
– Canned vegetables and fruits
– Peanut butter and jelly
– Pasta, rice, and cereal
– Personal care items such as shampoo, bar soap, and toothpaste
– Baby formula and diapers

Patti Bruno, executive director of the Allentown School District Foundation, expressed the importance of community involvement, stating, “These are our families, our neighbors, our students — and they deserve to know their community is here to support them.”

The initiative is receiving support from local organizations, including the Second Harvest Food Bank and the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, both of which are committed to addressing food insecurity in the region.

As families in the Allentown area face increased challenges, this food drive represents a vital lifeline, reinforcing the message that collective community efforts can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. Contributions are welcomed and encouraged to ensure that no family goes hungry during this difficult time.
