Elektron Launches Tonverk: A Game-Changer in Sampler Technology

Elektron has unveiled its latest innovation, the Tonverk, a polyphonic sampler and groovebox that promises to redefine electronic music production. Priced at $1,599, the Tonverk is designed to attract both traditional and experimental musicians, building on Elektron’s reputation for unique and sometimes complex musical instruments.
At the heart of the Tonverk is an advanced eight-track polyphonic sampler that operates with three distinct modes: Single Player, Multi Player, and Subtracks. The Single Player mode allows users to play back a single sample chromatically across the keyboard, while Multi Player combines multiple samples from the same instrument for a more authentic sound. Notably, the Tonverk can autonomously create multisampled instruments by sending MIDI notes to external devices and recording the resulting audio.
Despite its innovative features, some limitations have been noted. Currently, the firmware does not support editing of samples created through this process, which could pose challenges if latency occurs or recordings cut off prematurely. The Subtracks mode further complicates the workflow by allowing users to load up to eight samples into a single track. While this feature streamlines the process of managing multiple drum sounds, applying effects impacts all samples within a Subtrack uniformly, which may not suit all producers.
Music creators looking for sample manipulation capabilities may find the absence of a sample chopping mode a drawback, particularly hip-hop producers who enjoy working with varied sound bites. The company’s demonstration video indicates that there are “initially three fresh machines,” suggesting that additional features may be forthcoming.
The Tonverk is equipped with 17 built-in effects, three effects sends, and enhanced capabilities for routing audio through external effects units. It also includes the renowned Elektron sequencer, featuring 256 steps and customizable pattern lengths, thus providing extensive options for sound design and sequencing.
This launch marks the introduction of a new hardware platform for Elektron, which has yet to disclose plans for future devices. The Tonverk is currently sold out directly from Elektron, but pre-orders are available through third-party retailers such as Perfect Circuit and B&H.
As more musicians explore the Tonverk’s capabilities, it is clear that this device is set to make a significant impact on the landscape of electronic music production.
