Young Entrepreneur’s Viral Journey to Y Combinator Recognition
A 14-year-old entrepreneur from Wollongong, Australia, has gained attention after his application to Y Combinator went viral. Alby Churven, the founder of Clovr, a front-end vibecoding startup, shared insights about the unique challenges and advantages of starting a business at a young age.
Churven’s journey into entrepreneurship started at just 12 years old when he launched an e-commerce grip socks brand called Alpha Grips. Despite its failure, this experience sparked his interest in business. He noted that many young entrepreneurs often explore e-commerce, influenced by the prevalent “get rich quick” narratives surrounding drop-shipping and cryptocurrency, despite the high risks of scams involved.
Churven’s recent venture, Clovr, came to life after he reached out to established founder Frank Greeff with a cold email. Greeff encouraged him to build in public through social media, a move that significantly impacted Churven’s visibility in the startup community.
Applying to Y Combinator, Churven diverged from the standard application format by creating a polished video instead of the typical webcam submission. This distinctive approach attracted considerable attention, leading to the viral nature of his application. He tweeted about it on November 10, 2025, saying, “Just applied to @ycombinator as a 14-year-old founder.”
Despite the excitement generated by his application, Churven faces challenges, particularly a new social media ban in Australia for individuals under 16. While he acknowledges the opportunities that social media has provided, he does not support the restrictions that limit young entrepreneurs from leveraging these platforms.
Reflecting on his age, Churven sees both advantages and disadvantages. He believes that starting young alleviates financial pressure, allowing for experimentation and learning. “My goal right now is to build as many things as possible, learn as much as possible, and see where it goes,” he explained. His perspective is that younger generations approach technology and entrepreneurship differently, often embracing innovations like artificial intelligence that some older individuals may struggle with.
Churven is currently in the United States, where he has made valuable connections within the startup ecosystem. He views his youth as a unique advantage, enabling him to stand out in a competitive landscape. Nevertheless, he acknowledges that his age can also undermine his credibility, as some may not take him seriously in his pursuits.
While he has bootstrapped his projects thus far, Churven is beginning to recognize the need for funding. He expressed interest in applying for accelerator programs, including Y Combinator, where he previously interviewed for another startup before facing rejection. He understands the importance of early engagement with such programs, hoping to gain valuable experience for future applications.
Churven is also considering grants as a viable funding source. He believes that while grants may not provide substantial amounts, they do not require giving away equity, a decision he feels could add undue pressure on young entrepreneurs. “Giving away equity young is not a good decision,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of focusing on building and learning without the burden of immediate performance expectations.
As he navigates the challenges of being a young entrepreneur, Churven remains optimistic about his future in the tech startup landscape. He aims to continue learning and growing, with a clear vision of his aspirations in the industry.
