United Way Launches 2025 Campaign with $1.1 Million Goal
The United Way has officially launched its fundraising campaign for 2025, aiming to raise a significant goal of $1,111,111.11. The announcement was made on September 12, 2023, during a kickoff event held at the F&M Trolley Barn in Salisbury. The campaign is themed “Join the Symphony of Change,” reflecting an approach that emphasizes community collaboration in addressing local challenges.
Eric Slipp, the newly appointed campaign chair, took the stage to share his vision for the upcoming fundraising year. Slipp, a graduate of Georgia Tech with a degree in chemical engineering, has been an active volunteer in Salisbury since his retirement in 2020. He has held various positions within the United Way and has been involved in several community organizations, including the Piedmont Players Theatre and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
During the kickoff, Slipp highlighted the extensive planning that has gone into the campaign, stating, “We started months ago with our plans and preparations and assembling the cabinet.” He introduced various team members who will play key roles throughout the campaign, including Joe Crapster, Jonathan Williams, and Carol Ann Houpe, among others.
As a nod to the campaign’s theme, Slipp orchestrated a reveal of the fundraising goal. Those on stage donned special campaign T-shirts, revealing the target as symphonic music played in the background. “This is where we are,” said Slipp, emphasizing that every contribution counts, even the 11 cents included in the goal.
Fostering Community Engagement
Slipp expressed that the theme “Join the Symphony of Change” resonates deeply with him, given his background in music. He noted, “It takes the contributions of everyone to resolve these issues,” and encouraged community members to combine their talents and resources to enhance the lives of Rowan County residents.
He acknowledged the pressing issues facing the community, including substance abuse, mental health challenges, and homelessness. “Problems are not limited to just one group or location; they are everywhere,” he stated. Slipp expressed pride in the dedication of those who provide frontline services, acknowledging their long hours and often underappreciated work.
Community Impact Partners of the United Way include organizations such as Rowan Helping Ministries, the Salvation Army, and the YMCA of Rowan County. Representatives from these partners shared their challenges during the event, reinforcing the importance of the funds raised through the campaign.
Acknowledging Contributions and Challenges
The event also featured a car giveaway announcement, with local dealerships participating in the initiative. United Way Board President Jim Behmer expressed gratitude towards sponsors, caterers, attendees, and the multitude of volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the campaign’s success.
In a heartfelt moment, Lee, a board member, paid tribute to Melissa Robbins, a beloved staff member who recently passed away. Lee described Robbins as a profound inspiration and a strong advocate for community service, saying, “I don’t know if I’ve ever met someone who believed in United Way and giving to their community as much as she did.”
As the kickoff concluded, Slipp reiterated the seriousness of the campaign’s objectives, underscoring the urgent need for support. He conveyed that while the work is challenging, there is always room for camaraderie and joy among those involved. “You can and do make a difference,” Slipp assured attendees, setting a hopeful tone for the year ahead.
With the campaign officially underway, the United Way seeks to unite the community in a shared mission to address pressing needs and foster a more supportive environment for all residents of Rowan County.
