Study Reveals Why Men Struggle in Online Dating Pursuits

A recent study examining the dynamics of online dating has revealed significant insights into the behaviors of heterosexual men and women. Researchers from the Czech Republic analyzed user interactions on a popular dating app, concluding that while men often pursue partners perceived as more desirable, successful matches are more likely to occur between individuals of similar desirability levels. The findings were published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Understanding Desirability in Online Dating
The study utilized data from July 2017, focusing on over 2,000 heterosexual users from Prague and 624 from Brno. By employing social network analysis, the researchers mapped user interactions—termed “swipes”—to identify patterns of interest. Their findings indicated a hierarchical structure within the user network, where women generally ranked higher in desirability. This imbalance is attributed to the app’s skewed gender ratio, with significantly more male users than female.
This disparity has resulted in distinct dating behaviors: men typically act as “pursuers,” sending more messages than they receive, while women assume the role of “choosers,” receiving a larger volume of messages. According to the researchers, this dynamic reflects broader societal norms surrounding dating.
The Impact of Rejection on Matching
As the study progressed, it uncovered notable differences in the pursuit strategies adopted by men and women. Men tended to express interest in women they perceived as more desirable, whereas women sought partners of similar desirability. Interestingly, the study noted that women often chose partners who were slightly less desirable, though the researchers cautioned against overinterpreting this trend, given the limited variability in men’s desirability.
“Successful matches tend to happen between people with similar levels of desirability,” the authors stated. “This pattern is largely the result of rejection, rather than an initial preference for similarity.”
This conclusion suggests that the reality of online dating often tempers aspirational pursuits. The researchers posited that the stronger position of women in the dating market—due in part to the higher number of men—affects these outcomes. Men are frequently expected to initiate contact, leading to a cycle where rejection drives preferences towards more similarly ranked partners.
While the study sheds light on critical aspects of online dating dynamics, it acknowledges limitations, such as its focus solely on heterosexual users and one type of dating platform. Future research could expand to include queer users and various dating applications, further enriching the understanding of these complex interactions.
In summary, this research provides valuable insights into how online dating works in practice, highlighting the nuanced interplay between aspiration and reality. As more individuals turn to digital platforms for companionship, understanding these dynamics becomes increasingly essential.
