Rotary Club of Eureka Opens Applications for Community Grants

The Rotary Club of Eureka has announced the opening of applications for the 2025 Glyndon “Sign” and Ruth Smith Community Grants. Local organizations are invited to submit proposals that aim to create a significant impact in the greater Eureka area. The deadline for submissions is set for October 15, 2025.
These grants are supported by a legacy gift of nearly $700,000 left by the estate of longtime Rotary member Glyndon “Sign” Smith and his wife, Ruth, in 1996. A press release from the Rotary Club highlights the unique history of Smith, who began performing magic at the age of 10. He earned the nickname “Boy Wonder” as a teenager and went on to perform professionally in various acts, including fire-eating and card tricks. After moving to Eureka in the early 1920s, he established a sign-making business and became a dedicated member of the Rotary Club, attending meetings for an impressive 68 years.
Empowering Local Projects
The Rotary Club of Eureka, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023, remains committed to enhancing the local community through various initiatives. On average, grants typically range around $20,000, enabling organizations to start or expand projects that foster lasting, positive change.
The administration of these grants is managed in collaboration with the Humboldt Area Foundation and the Wild Rivers Community Foundation. This partnership aims to bolster charitable organizations across the region, ensuring that vital support reaches those who need it most.
Past Recipients and Application Process
Previous grant recipients include notable organizations such as Food For People, Redwood Art Association, Humboldt Trails Council, and the Jefferson Community Center. Local nonprofits and community groups are strongly encouraged to apply for this opportunity.
