The Plantation Shoppe, a family-owned gift store in Wayne County, has been a holiday staple for more than four decades. Since opening its doors in November 1983, the shop has evolved from selling antiques to offering a diverse range of gifts and collectibles, particularly during the festive season. According to co-manager Andy Gray, the store is known for its extensive selection of items, including candles, pottery, plush toys, potpourri, and collectibles like the popular Byers Choice Christmas Carolers, which are currently discounted by 40%.

Originally located in the Eastgate Shopping Center along North Berkeley Boulevard, the Plantation Shoppe has since moved to its present location at 307 N. Spence Ave. in Cobblestone Place. “We’re busier at this time of year,” Gray noted, emphasizing the increased foot traffic during the holiday season. While the shop still carries some antiques, it primarily focuses on gifts and collectibles, reflecting a shift in customer preferences over the years.

Holiday Offerings and Collectibles

During the holiday season, the Plantation Shoppe showcases a variety of Christmas-themed items, including night lights, ornaments, Christmas village sets, and Fontanini Nativity sets. Gray highlighted that these nativity sets are particularly popular, with six new pieces introduced this year. The shop also features collectibles from brands such as Jim Shore, Department 56, and Claire Burke Fragrance, with many products crafted in the United States or China.

In addition to holiday items, customers can find collegiate-themed ornaments representing institutions like the University of North Carolina, N.C. State University, Eastern Carolina University, and Western Carolina University. With a focus on maximizing sales, Gray mentioned that many holiday-themed items will remain available even after New Year’s Day. “The Christmas villages stay out all year long,” she explained.

Challenges and Community Support

Despite the store’s success, Gray acknowledged the challenges faced by small businesses in the area. With some gift shops closing their doors in recent years, sustaining operations has become increasingly difficult. “My mother, Joyce Edwards, is the owner, and I’m the backup woman,” Gray said, expressing their desire to retire soon but also highlighting the importance of community support.

The warm interactions with customers provide encouragement. Gray recounted a recent encounter where a shopper expressed appreciation for the store’s longevity, saying, “I love your shop. I was wondering if you all were still open. I’m just so glad you’re still here.” Such sentiments reinforce the connection the Plantation Shoppe has built with its patrons over the years.

As the holiday season approaches, the Plantation Shoppe continues to serve as a beloved destination for residents seeking unique gifts and collectibles. With a commitment to quality products and a welcoming atmosphere, the store remains an integral part of the Wayne County community, celebrating over 40 years of tradition and service.
