Ohio State University has achieved remarkable academic success among its student-athletes, as highlighted in the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR) report released by the NCAA. The Buckeyes recorded a single-year GSR of 94 and a four-year rolling average of 93, marking the highest figures in the institution’s history for the third consecutive year. This announcement underscores the university’s commitment to supporting student-athletes both on and off the field.

The NCAA’s GSR methodology has evolved, now including transfer and mid-year enrollees, providing a more accurate representation of student-athletes’ academic progress. The data reflects the performance of freshman cohorts from 2015-2016 to 2018-2019, demonstrating a comprehensive view of the academic landscape within collegiate athletics.

Celebrating Academic Excellence Across Teams

The achievement is not limited to a few standout teams. A total of fifteen teams at Ohio State attained a perfect GSR score of 100, spanning various sports, from artistic swimming to wrestling. Additionally, eight teams recorded strong performances with scores of 90 or above. These statistics highlight a university-wide commitment to academic excellence across its athletic programs.

John E. Davidson, Faculty Athletics Representative at Ohio State, praised the consistency demonstrated by the student-athletes. He stated, “These high scores reflect a culture of care that values academic achievement as a prime component of the world-class student-athlete experience.” His remarks emphasize the importance of nurturing an environment where academic success is prioritized alongside athletic performance.

Among the athletic teams, twelve managed to either maintain a perfect score or improve upon their previous year’s performance. This achievement underscores the dedication of coaches and the support provided by the Student Athlete Support Services Office, which plays a crucial role in enabling student-athletes to excel academically.

Football Team’s Continued Academic Success

The Buckeyes’ football program also contributed to this impressive record by maintaining a program-best GSR score of 89 for the fourth consecutive year. This accomplishment is particularly significant for a program that often garners attention for its achievements on the field. The consistent academic performance of Ohio State’s student-athletes positions them as role models, illustrating the ethos of being a student first and an athlete second.

Davidson further noted, “That two-thirds of the 25 teams maintaining or improving on last year’s score attained a perfect 100 speaks to the commitment of coaches, the support of the Student Athlete Support Services Office staff, and, most of all, the incredible dedication of student-athletes to succeed to the utmost of their abilities in all their endeavors.”

Overall, Ohio State University has set a high standard for academic success in collegiate athletics, demonstrating that student-athletes can excel in both their studies and their sports.
