Newton County Achieves Aetna Platinum Award for Employee Wellness
Newton County has been awarded the prestigious Aetna Platinum Award for its comprehensive employee well-being programs, underscoring its commitment to fostering a healthy workplace. This recognition highlights the county’s integrated approach to supporting nearly 760 employees across various dimensions of well-being, including physical, mental, financial, and social health.
The transition from a Bronze award last year to the Platinum accolade reflects Newton County’s significant advancements in workplace wellness. According to a recent announcement, this achievement positions the county among the top contenders in a national competition that draws entries from multiple sectors.
Holistic Initiatives Enhance Employee Engagement
Newton County has implemented several innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing employee engagement and health. One notable event is the annual walk-a-thon, which encourages physical activity among staff. Additionally, “Lunch & Learn” sessions focusing on men’s health and other wellness challenges are part of the county’s efforts to keep employees active and motivated.
Mental health is also a priority in Newton County, as evidenced by the usage of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which has reported a remarkable 92% utilization rate. This indicates a strong commitment to addressing mental and emotional well-being. Furthermore, the county provides financial literacy sessions to empower employees with essential fiscal knowledge, along with partnerships with local businesses that offer discounts to staff, showcasing a holistic approach to workforce wellness.
Acknowledgment and Community Impact
Dr. Amanda Shoemaker, the Human Resources Director for Newton County, attributes this recognition to the collective efforts of the staff and particularly acknowledges HR Specialist Marissa Gray for her role in transforming wellness initiatives into effective programs. “This Platinum honor belongs to every Newton County employee who shows up for one another—every day,” Dr. Shoemaker stated in an interview with the county news center.
The county further promotes social and community well-being through events such as the County Manager’s “September to Remember” Employee Picnic, which fosters camaraderie among staff. Initiatives like the Book Bus, aimed at enhancing community literacy, reflect Newton County’s commitment not only to employee welfare but also to the broader community.
As Newton County continues to receive accolades for its workplace wellness initiatives, it reinforces its position as an employer that values the holistic well-being of its staff. Dr. Shoemaker has extended an invitation to potential job seekers, encouraging them to consider Newton County as a place where employees are appreciated beyond their job roles and can truly feel at home. This recognition highlights the county’s ongoing commitment to creating a thriving environment for both employees and the community they serve.
