Glasgow’s Mae MacInnes Honoured by Scottish Parliament for Award Win

Members of the Scottish Parliament recognized Mae MacInnes, general manager of Mharsanta in Glasgow’s Merchant City, for her significant contributions to Scotland’s tourism industry. The acknowledgment came as a result of her recent achievement, winning the Rising Star Award at the West of Scotland Thistle Awards held on September 25, 2025.
A motion was lodged at Holyrood by Dr. Sandesh Gulhane and Annie Wells on October 1, praising Mae for her “inspirational” leadership and her role in enhancing Scotland’s hospitality landscape. The motion highlighted her efforts in running day-to-day operations at Mharsanta while also delivering award-winning dining experiences, including the acclaimed “Taste of Scotland” menu.
Mae’s journey in hospitality began at the tender age of 13 in Skye, where she honed her skills over the years. She joined Mharsanta seven years ago and was appointed general manager in 2020. Her dedication culminated in the recognition she received at the Thistle Awards, where she expressed her pride in the hospitality sector.
“I’ve been working so hard for so long that it feels truly incredible to be honoured with this award,” Mae stated. She emphasized the cultural importance of hospitality, noting, “It’s how we can express our culture, bond with friends and family, and reconnect with what it truly means to be Scottish.”
Mae’s contributions extend beyond her restaurant. She pioneered the “Taste of Scotland” immersive dining experience, which previously won an award for innovation in tourism at the Thistle Awards in 2023. This initiative invites guests to sample traditional Scottish cuisine, such as venison, paired with fine whiskies in a five-course tasting menu. Mae leads these culinary experiences, providing insights into Scotland’s rich history and culture.
In her role, Mae has also collaborated with the National Trust of Scotland, contributing to heritage locations like Culzean Castle. Drawing from her upbringing in the village of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye, she utilizes her extensive knowledge of Scottish produce and history to create unique experiences for both tourists and locals.
Recently, Mae has been at the forefront of the “Make Travel Matter” initiative, part of a sustainability program with a prominent tour operator. Her expertise also encompasses working with VisitScotland on the Travel Corporation’s decarbonisation project, showcasing her commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable tourism.
Mae reflected on her goals for the future: “I hope to be able to continue to develop and lead my team at Mharsanta, showcasing the excellence within Scottish hospitality and focusing on drawing people into Scotland to share just what our small but mighty country has to offer.”
As she looks ahead, Mae MacInnes stands as a testament to the potential of Scottish hospitality, blending tradition with innovation and making a lasting impact on the industry.
