Friends of the Arcata Marsh Launches ‘35@35’ Membership Drive

The Friends of the Arcata Marsh (FOAM) has initiated the “35@35” membership campaign to commemorate its 35th anniversary. This effort aims to attract at least 35 new members during 2025, enhancing support for the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary, a cherished 300-acre site in Humboldt County known for its extensive trails, diverse wildlife, and critical wastewater treatment functions.
Founded in 1988, FOAM plays a vital role in maintaining and improving the sanctuary. The organization provides educational services and funds various projects, ensuring that both residents and visitors benefit from the marsh’s unique environment. Activities organized by FOAM include community outreach, interpretive tours, and the removal of invasive plant species. These initiatives are free and accessible to everyone, reflecting FOAM’s commitment to enhancing public engagement with the marsh.
In a recent statement, FOAM treasurer and long-time member Sue Leskiw highlighted the organization’s history and accomplishments. “For nearly three decades, we have not conducted a focused membership campaign. To celebrate our milestone, I proposed a membership goal,” she said. The board enthusiastically supported the initiative, leading to the official launch of the “35@35” campaign.
The campaign not only seeks to grow the membership base, which currently stands at around 175, but also aims to raise awareness about FOAM’s contributions. Members receive a quarterly newsletter and regular email updates about events. Those who join before mid-September will be invited to the annual meeting on September 28, 2025, which includes a volunteer appreciation lunch.
Participants joining in 2025 will also have the chance to win prizes at a special event in January 2026, with items such as nature-themed artwork and books already being collected for the drawing.
FOAM’s contributions to the Arcata Marsh are substantial. The organization has funded several key projects, including raising $13,000 for an amphitheater and providing resources for interpretive displays and educational materials. FOAM has also published guidebooks and supported the creation of a new half-time groundskeeper position, further enhancing the marsh’s upkeep.
Under the leadership of dedicated members like Ken Burton, FOAM organizes weekly tours and special request excursions for schools and community groups. In the previous fiscal year, there were 88 special tours serving 569 attendees, showcasing the marsh’s biodiversity and ecological importance.
FOAM is equally committed to environmental education. The organization offers monthly lectures on various science and conservation topics and has been active in local schools through programs like “Wetlands on Wheels.” Since 2007, FOAM has provided research grants to students at Cal Poly Humboldt, focusing on important ecological issues such as carbon sequestration and the impact of invasive species.
Community outreach also plays a significant role in FOAM’s efforts. The organization participates in public events, promoting the marsh and engaging families through activities like nature crafts at Godwit Days, a local bird festival.
Moreover, FOAM has co-sponsored the Student Bird Art Contest for over two decades, encouraging artistic expression among local K-12 students. Winning entries are displayed at the Interpretive Center, fostering a connection between youth and the natural world.
FOAM’s stewardship initiatives include organizing volunteer days for invasive plant removal and advocating for sustainable practices. Their efforts have contributed to the overall health of the marsh ecosystem, ensuring that this vital green space remains accessible and vibrant for future generations.
As the “35@35” campaign unfolds, FOAM invites everyone who cherishes the Arcata Marsh to consider membership. Information and application forms are available at the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center or on their website at www.arcatamarshfriends.org. Engaging with FOAM offers an opportunity to play an active role in preserving and enhancing this beloved sanctuary.
