The Friends of the Homosassa Library are set to host their Fall Book Sale on November 14-15, showcasing the community’s resilience and dedication to supporting local literacy initiatives. This nonprofit organization, founded in 1991, has a rich history of enhancing library resources and services.

Founded in Old Homosassa by a group of library supporters, the Friends organization made a significant impact in 2007 by donating $50,000 to purchase books and materials for the new library. However, their commitment faced a severe challenge in December 2015 when a fire at Great Floors in Homosassa destroyed their storage space. The blaze obliterated all their inventory for the upcoming spring book sale, including 40 to 50 boxes of sorted books, a significant collection of cookbooks, and essential supplies like sorting tables and signage.

The community’s response to this disaster was overwhelming. A January 2016 article in the local Chronicle highlighted the Friends’ urgent appeal for donations, and the community rallied to support them. The spring book sale turned into a resounding success, attracting large crowds, with people even parking in a nearby ballfield due to the high turnout. This demonstrated the strong bond between the Friends of the Homosassa Library and the local residents.

Today, nearly a decade later, the Friends continue to play a crucial role in supporting the Homosassa Library. They raise funds to enhance services and resources that the library’s budget does not cover, such as updating furniture, painting walls, and purchasing literacy computers for children. Proceeds from their book sales are vital to these efforts.

The upcoming Fall Book Sale promises a diverse selection of items beyond just books. Scheduled for November 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and November 15 from 9 a.m. to noon, the sale will be held at the library located at 4100 S. Grandmarch Ave., at the corner of Grover Cleveland Boulevard and Grandmarch Avenue. Alongside books, attendees can expect to find puzzles, CDs, DVDs, and other media, with many items being lightly used.

In addition to the extensive selection, a raffle for a Thanksgiving Dinner Basket will also be available, adding another layer of excitement to the event. For more information, interested individuals can call the library at 352-628-5626.

The Friends of the Homosassa Library exemplify the spirit of community resilience and the importance of supporting local resources. Their upcoming book sale is not just an opportunity to acquire new reading materials, but also a reminder of the strength that lies within community bonds.
