Seniors Embrace Lifelong Learning at UNLV’s OLLI Program
In the heart of Las Vegas, a unique educational program caters to a growing community of seniors eager to continue their learning journey. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has become an essential resource for over 1,100 retired and semi-retired individuals who refuse to see learning as something tied solely to youth.
A Hub for Knowledge and Connection
Located just off Maryland Parkway, OLLI offers a diverse range of courses that do not contribute towards any formal credentials. Participants engage in subjects from short story writing to conversational Italian, all in a supportive, non-competitive environment where there are no grades. Membership costs $115 for a semester or $235 for an entire year, with instructors enjoying free access to classes.
Alison Kasner, 65, has been a part of the OLLI community for nearly 15 years, having joined shortly after retiring from her position with the Clark County School District. “We are truly the senior class at UNLV,” she remarked. Kasner has explored various interests, taking courses such as an introduction to wine and a class titled “The Truth About Happiness.”
Another member, Mala Skelton, 74, relocated to Las Vegas from Southern California and has found OLLI to be a platform for both learning and socializing. “Everywhere you go about town, you meet people from OLLI. It’s been the greatest thing,” she said, highlighting the program’s role in fostering friendships among its members.
Adaptability and Resilience During the Pandemic
While in-person classes are popular, OLLI has adapted to include remote and hybrid offerings, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many seniors found themselves isolated during this time, and the shift to online learning proved crucial for maintaining connections. “Something really wonderful happened during COVID when we started to do Zoom classes,” Kasner explained, noting the importance of the social interaction that OLLI provides.
For those like Fran Smith, who teaches an art history course, OLLI represents more than just an educational opportunity; it is a community. “This is my fourth career,” she joked, explaining how her desire to learn led her to take a class, which eventually inspired her to teach. Over her decade-long involvement, Smith has contributed to various committees, emphasizing the value of social bonds formed through shared learning experiences.
The institute operates under UNLV’s Lifelong Learning initiative, formerly known as the Division of Educational Outreach. It is part of a national network supported by the Bernard Osher Foundation, which oversees over 100 such institutes across the United States, promoting lifelong learning among older adults.
As seniors continue to embrace education well into their retirement, programs like OLLI play a vital role in enriching their lives, combating isolation, and fostering community connections. In a world that often overlooks the learning potential of older adults, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute stands out as a beacon of opportunity and engagement in the Las Vegas Valley.
