Jim Paul Ogilvie, Beloved Actor and Tai Chi Teacher, Dies at 65

Jim Paul Ogilvie, a resident of Virginia Beach, passed away unexpectedly on July 28, 2025, at the age of 65. He died at a temporary residence in Norfolk, Virginia, as he was preparing to begin new cancer treatments. Ogilvie had been battling cancer intermittently for several years before complications led to his untimely death.
Born in 1959 in Washington, D.C., Ogilvie spent his formative years in Arlington, Virginia, where he was raised by his mother and grandparents. From a young age, he developed a passion for acting and stunt work, which propelled him to various cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, as well as Virginia Beach, where he ultimately settled.
Career Highlights and Personal Life
Ogilvie’s career spanned various entertainment fields; he featured in television shows, commercials, and live theater, with a notable appearance as a featured extra in the iconic film Silence of the Lambs. Despite his successes, his true passion lay in the practice and teaching of Tai Chi and Qigong. As both student and instructor, he found immense fulfillment in sharing the benefits of these disciplines with others.
Beyond his artistic pursuits, Ogilvie enjoyed outdoor activities. He was an avid martial artist, cyclist, and sports enthusiast, particularly cheering for the Washington Commanders and Washington Nationals, a passion he shared with his father. His love for nature was evident in his daily life, where he sought balance through exercise and meditation.
Ogilvie’s personal life was profoundly impacted by the loss of his long-time companion, Darlene Converse, who passed away in 2024. He often spoke of the joy they shared together, and her memory remained a cherished part of his life.

Jim Paul Ogilvie is remembered not only for his contributions to the arts but also for the deep connections he forged with family and friends. He is survived by his siblings: Janis Garrett, Eric Ogilvie, Amy Ogilvie, Mike Ogilvie, and Noelle Quade, along with twelve nieces and nephews who will carry on his legacy.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Ogilvie’s life will take place on August 16, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Eureka Park, located at 2600 Southern Boulevard, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23452. Friends, family, and admirers are all welcome to attend as they honor his memory and remarkable spirit.
