Woodland Students Shine at Concilio of Yolo County Recognition Event

Four seniors from the Woodland Joint Unified School District (WJUSD) were honored for their academic achievements at the Concilio of Yolo County’s 37th Annual Recognition Dinner and Scholarship Fundraiser on October 11, 2023. The event, held at the Woodland Community and Senior Center, celebrated the organization’s commitment to empowering youth and fostering community development, awarding scholarships to twelve graduating seniors from various schools across Yolo County.

The distinguished WJUSD students recognized at the event were Camila Perez and Christopher Giroux from Pioneer High School, alongside Jenell Gomez Gutierrez and Raul Sandoval from Woodland High School. Each honoree was selected for their exceptional academic performance and dedication to making a positive impact in their communities.

WJUSD Superintendent Elodia Ortega-Lampkin expressed pride in the students’ accomplishments. “We’re so proud of our student scholars for their academic achievement,” Ortega-Lampkin stated. “Their hard work, dedication, and leadership remind us of what is possible when our students are empowered, encouraged, and inspired to reach their full potential.”

During the event, Perez shared her gratitude and reflected on how her cultural background has influenced her educational journey. “I’m extremely honored and grateful to receive this scholarship,” Perez said. “It means so much to know that my community believes in me and wants to support me as I continue my education. I also want to thank my parents, who have always taught me the importance of loving and appreciating my culture. My culture has served as my foundation for learning, and I’m beyond excited to start my college journey next year.”

Sandoval, who aspires to become a surgeon, articulated his plans following graduation. “After graduation, I plan to attend a four-year college to study biology or another science,” he shared. “Later, I hope to become a surgeon so I can make a real difference in people’s lives through healthcare. I also want to thank my parents for their constant support and for showing me that hard work and dedication truly pay off.”

Gomez Gutierrez emphasized the role her family has played in her academic journey, stating, “My goal is to become a doctor and continue helping those in need. The people who have influenced me the most to succeed in life are my family, because they are the ones who have always been by my side, supporting me every second. They are the ones who give me the strength and power to continue. I would like to thank Concilio for this opportunity and for recognizing my hard work. Thank you!”

Giroux also expressed his appreciation for the scholarship and recognition. “I would like to thank the Concilio for this scholarship and my family for pushing me to get where I am today,” he said. “This recognition means so much to me, and I am grateful for this scholarship because it shows that I have my local community backing me up and helping me pursue my dreams.”

The event also recognized community leaders with the Aguila Awards, which were presented to individuals from each of Yolo County’s five districts. Honorees included KSBW reporter Leticia Ordaz (District 1), Alicia Chavez (District 2), Vincent Olvera (District 3), Rita Durgin (District 4), and the Albert Estrada Family (District 5). Special recognition was given to The Honorable Sonia Cortes of the Superior Court of Yolo County for her years of dedicated service.

Jesse Ortiz, president of the Concilio Board of Directors, praised all twelve students honored at the event. “These young scholars are a true reflection of what the Concilio stands for,” Ortiz said. “Honoring excellence, celebrating culture, and investing in the future of our community. We are proud to recognize and support these students as they continue their educational journeys.”

This event not only highlighted the academic achievements of WJUSD students but also underscored the vital role of community and culture in shaping future leaders.
