AUSTIN, Texas — As the new school year approaches, many students in Central Texas lack the essential supplies and support needed for academic success. To address this issue, the United Way is launching a back-to-school fundraising campaign aimed at ensuring children are prepared for the classroom and equipped with the resources necessary for long-term achievement.

The campaign addresses critical needs, including basic school supplies, mental health resources, and classes for caregivers. These elements can significantly impact a child’s educational journey. With just weeks left in summer break, the United Way is actively working to mobilize community support to fill these gaps.

Holistic Support for Youth Development

Advancing youth opportunities remains a central focus for the global United Way network. The organization adopts a comprehensive approach, offering programs in child care, early education, after-school and summer learning, literacy development, and college and career readiness. These initiatives aim to empower young people and their caregivers, helping them realize their full potential.

Recent achievements highlight the effectiveness of United Way’s programs. Students have benefited from vision screenings and access to appropriate eyewear at school, engaged in interactive reading initiatives for children with incarcerated parents, and received support resources tailored for high school students facing homelessness.

According to the 2024 Impact Survey conducted by United Way, 73% of children involved in youth opportunity strategies were proficient in school readiness assessments by the end of kindergarten. Additionally, 56% were able to read at grade level between kindergarten and third grade, while 73% maintained or improved their school attendance. These positive outcomes during critical early education years are linked to long-term success, including timely graduation.

Community Collaboration for Resource Allocation

Even seemingly minor contributions, such as notebooks, pencils, and nutritious meals, can create a substantial difference in a child’s life. The United Way collaborates closely with schools, youth-based organizations, and community partners to identify and address these resource gaps effectively.

This back-to-school season, local media outlet KVUE, along with partners H-E-B and Texas Mutual, is amplifying United Way’s efforts to provide students with necessary resources. The KVUE-United Way School Supply Drive seeks to raise funds within the community to support local youth. Donations will be distributed to 25 pre-selected United Ways across the country, based on donor ZIP codes.

As a member of the TEGNA network, KVUE is committed to this fundraising initiative. Monetary donations will be allocated to the United Way for purchasing supplies tailored to local needs and supporting existing youth opportunity programs focused on back-to-school preparation. Individuals can donate online from July 21 to August 11 by visiting the United Way’s website.

In conclusion, the collaborative effort by United Way and local partners aims to ensure that students in Central Texas are well-equipped for the upcoming school year, ultimately enhancing their chances for success both in and out of the classroom.
