Harris Hill Elementary Unveils New Sensory Room for Students
Harris Hill Elementary School in Clarence, New York, has launched a new sensory de-escalation room to support the diverse needs of its students. Funded by a generous grant of $22,500 from PERMA, this innovative space features engaging elements such as slides, trampolines, bubble tubes, and tactile boards. The aim is to provide students with a calming environment where they can reset and manage their sensory needs effectively.
The introduction of the sensory room has already had a positive impact on students, as noted by parents Greg and Kristen Arnold. Their daughter, Sloane, who is on the autism spectrum, benefits from the space in managing her sensory challenges, allowing her to concentrate better in class. Her brother, Brooks, who is neurotypical, also finds joy in the room’s activities. “It’s great for all kids too,” Kristen Arnold shared, emphasizing that the room is beneficial for children regardless of their sensory profiles.
Inclusive Approach to Sensory Needs
Teachers and staff at Harris Hill Elementary highlight that the sensory room is designed for all students, not just those with specific diagnoses. Christine Rich-Reese, a teacher’s aide and therapeutic crisis intervention trainer, explained that every child has sensory needs, which can vary in visibility. “I believe what we will see is independent and successful learners,” Rich-Reese stated. “When a child is helped to realize what helps calm themselves down, they’re able to do it themselves.”
Principal Rob Boccaccio reiterated the school’s commitment to making education accessible to every student. He noted that the sensory room is part of a broader initiative aimed at fostering an inclusive environment within the school. As the new academic year approaches, the room will be available for all students, ensuring they have the tools to support their emotional and sensory needs.
The establishment of this sensory room reflects a growing recognition of the importance of mental health and well-being in educational settings. By creating a space dedicated to sensory management, Harris Hill Elementary is paving the way for holistic approaches to learning that prioritize student well-being alongside academic success.
