The first graduating class of Anthony High School reunited recently to commemorate their 50th anniversary, reflecting on their educational journey and the remarkable transformation of the district. The Class of 1965, which began with just 20 students, gathered to celebrate not only their shared memories but also the vast changes that have taken place within the Anthony Independent School District (ISD).

In their time at the school, the alumni experienced a unique educational environment, characterized by a single building that served all their needs. “We were so amazed to see the growth, that it’s now actually a school district,” said Elva Bustamante-Holguin, a member of the Class of 1965. This reunion provided a stark contrast to the landscape they once knew, as many noted how the area has evolved from a surrounding desert to a thriving educational community.

Reflecting on the Past

During their time at Anthony High School, students attended classes in what was the only building for their educational pursuits. Christine Morales, another graduate, recalled, “Where the central office is now, that used to be the building where we had our classes. That was the only building that existed.” The alumni were intrigued by the significant changes, particularly the development of facilities that were nonexistent during their school years.

The district now boasts a range of activities and educational programs that enrich the learning experience. The graduates had never witnessed a football game on a district field or dined in a school cafeteria, opportunities that highlight the advancements made since their graduation. Bustamante-Holguin expressed her amazement, stating, “There have been so many improvements from when we were here,” as reported by Anthony ISD.

Celebrating Growth and Achievement

The reunion featured a tour of the modern facilities, led by Dr. Oscar A. Troncoso, the district superintendent. He showcased the strides that Anthony ISD has made over the decades, emphasizing the commitment to providing quality education and resources. The alumni left the event with a renewed appreciation for their alma mater and the growth it has experienced.

As the first graduates of Anthony High School reflect on their beginnings, they are proud to witness the evolution of the district into a comprehensive educational system, one that continues to foster growth and learning for future generations. Their reunion serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds formed during their formative years and the lasting impact of their educational journeys.
