Craven County Board of Education Elects New Leadership Team
The Craven County Board of Education has appointed new leadership for the upcoming academic year, naming Lee Kirkman as chairman and Amy Davis as vice chairman. The decision, made during a recent meeting, followed a vote in which Kirkman secured the chairman position with a tally of 5-2, defeating fellow nominee Jennifer Dacey. Dacey and Lauren Kitzinger were the only members to oppose Kirkman’s nomination.
Focus on Strategic Planning and Teacher Support
In his acceptance remarks, Kirkman emphasized the need for the board to review the strategic plan for Craven County Schools. He highlighted the importance of assessing current policies and initiatives, stating, “There are many, many things there that we need to review, to look at — may need to change, update, or whatever the case may be so that we can continue moving forward.”
Kirkman further expressed a commitment to supporting teachers and staff, whom he described as the backbone of the educational system. He acknowledged the board’s responsibility to deliver on its promises, urging members to unite in their efforts. “So many times we can fail in doing and delivering on what we need to do,” he said. “But we, as a board, must come together to be able to do those things, to come together as one, so that we can be truly the system that our students, parents, and stakeholders need to have.”
Davis, who was unopposed in her nomination for vice chairman, expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to serve in this role. “This position is more than a title to me,” she commented. “It is an opportunity to help strengthen our schools, support our educators, and ensure that every student in our district has what they need to grow, learn, and succeed.”
Commitment to Collaboration and Community
Davis shared her deep belief in the importance of collaboration and community engagement. She stated her intention to work closely with fellow board members to advocate for the needs of families and create an inclusive environment for all students. “I’m committed to working alongside each of you on this board to help push forward meaningful progress, to advocate for the needs of our families, and to help create an environment where every child feels seen and supported,” Davis explained.
The new leadership team is expected to address key issues affecting the district, ensuring that both educational standards and teacher welfare remain a priority. As the board embarks on this new chapter, the community looks forward to seeing the strategic initiatives that will shape the future of education in Craven County.
