Ram Defends Composite Control Arms Amid Online Speculation

Concerns are swirling around the durability of the Ram 1500’s control arms, prompting the brand to address speculation circulating on social media. The rumors suggest that the truck’s upper control arms are made of plastic, raising doubts about their reliability. In response, a representative from Ram clarified that these components are actually constructed from a composite material integrated with a steel structure, designed to enhance both strength and performance.
The controversy comes at a challenging time for Ram’s parent company, Stellantis, which has reported significant financial losses throughout 2025. As the brand strives to maintain its reputation, the emergence of these rumors appears particularly frustrating. Despite the negative perceptions, Ram’s upper control arms have been in use since the launch of the current-generation Ram 1500 in 2019 and have not faced any recalls during their years of service.
Understanding the Role of Control Arms
Control arms play a crucial role in vehicle suspension systems, connecting the wheels to the vehicle’s frame while managing both vertical and lateral movements. The upper control arms of the Ram 1500 resemble large cowboy spurs, with two attachment points connecting to the frame, enabling the suspension to absorb shocks from road irregularities.
These components are designed to work alongside bushings that minimize friction and wear. While they are vital for steering and suspension control, upper control arms do not bear the same load as lower control arms, allowing engineers to utilize lighter materials such as composites without compromising safety. This trend toward weight reduction in vehicle design reflects a broader industry movement toward innovative materials, including the use of composite suspension springs.
Potential Issues and Signs of Wear
Although control arms can last for over 100,000 miles, they are not impervious to damage. Severe impacts from collisions, curbs, or potholes can bend or break these components. Corrosion from exposure to road salt and moisture can also compromise their integrity. Drivers should be alert for signs of wear, which may include unusual clunking noises when navigating bumps, or vibrations in the steering wheel.
Worn bushings may lead to a situation where the control arm no longer maintains proper alignment of the wheels, resulting in uneven tire wear. In such cases, replacing the control arms may become necessary to ensure the vehicle remains safe and responsive on the road.
Despite the current scrutiny, there is no substantial evidence supporting claims that Ram’s composite control arms are inferior. The company emphasizes that these parts have been reliable since their introduction and are engineered to meet rigorous standards.
