Microsoft has released a new update for Windows 11, aimed at enhancing the dark mode experience. The update, identified as KB5070311, introduces a consistent dark mode across various applications, including the File Explorer, where users can now enjoy a dark interface while performing actions such as copying, moving, or deleting files and folders.

Despite these advancements, the update has not come without complications. Users have reported a significant issue: upon opening File Explorer in dark mode, a bright white flash briefly appears before the window loads its contents. Microsoft has acknowledged this problem in the known issues section of the update, stating, “After installing KB5070311, you might experience issues when opening File Explorer in dark mode. The window might briefly display a blank white screen before loading files and folders.” This disruption can be particularly jarring in low-light environments.

Microsoft Addresses Known Issues

In response to the widespread reports of the white flash, Microsoft has confirmed that it is actively working on a fix. Until an official resolution is available, users who are unable to tolerate the disruption can opt for a workaround using a mod called Windhawk. This mod allows users to revert the File Explorer dark mode to its previous state, avoiding the problematic flash.

The oversight in testing raises questions about quality control, especially as Microsoft has committed to providing a more “consistent dark mode experience” across the entirety of Windows 11. Alongside the improvements to File Explorer, the update also promises enhancements to the Run dialog, as well as upgrades to progress bars, chart views, and confirmation and error dialogs.

As users continue to navigate these changes, the reception of the update highlights the challenges Microsoft faces in balancing new features with the reliability of existing functionalities. The company’s ongoing commitment to refining the user experience remains evident as it seeks to address these concerns promptly.
