Restorative Reproductive Medicine Offers Hope for Infertile Couples

Approximately ten percent of couples in the United States face challenges with infertility, prompting some to explore a less conventional approach known as restorative reproductive medicine (RRM). This field focuses on identifying and addressing the underlying causes of infertility rather than resorting to in vitro fertilization (IVF). Couples like Karen and Anthony Monetti have found hope through this alternative, which emphasizes a more individualized treatment process.

Karen and Anthony Monetti, after nine years of marriage, felt a spiritual calling to start a family. “Put it in God’s hands,” Anthony told CBN News, a sentiment that resonated with Karen as well. Shortly after this decision, they discovered they were expecting. However, their journey was marred by heartbreak, as they experienced four miscarriages. “Nothing has hurt, and I’ve never grieved so much as the infertility journey,” Karen said. Despite the challenges, she expressed a belief in hope.

As they faced the prospect of IVF, Karen and Anthony chose to pursue RRM instead. “My hematologist suggested IVF due to my age and the risk of genetic defects,” Karen recalled. “But my husband and I decided against it, trusting that God would guide us.” Karen felt strongly about not having multiple embryos frozen, stating, “I could not bring myself to that, knowing that there was life there that was not inside of me.”

RRM begins with a comprehensive evaluation of the woman’s ovulation cycle and hormonal levels. “In 20 years of practice, I’ve never encountered a woman without identifiable issues contributing to infertility,” Dr. Golden-Tevald explained. “There’s always something we can find.” This thorough process includes extensive testing. “Right off the bat, it was a lot of testing,” Karen noted, highlighting the detailed analyses conducted by Dr. Eddie and Dr. Jean.

Men are evaluated as well, particularly regarding testosterone levels, which can affect both male function and sperm production. Dr. Fleming emphasized that infertility often stems from multiple factors. In the Monettis’ case, Karen faced serious blood clots and hormonal imbalances. “It’s almost always never just one thing,” Dr. Golden-Tevald remarked.

After implementing a treatment plan that included blood thinners and hormone therapy, the Monettis welcomed their daughter into the world. “My pregnancy was a huge success,” Karen said, describing her child as a “miracle.” The success rates of RRM are reported to be comparable to or better than those of IVF, with the added benefits of lower costs and minimal risks.

Despite its effectiveness, RRM remains relatively unknown. “I don’t think many people know it exists,” Karen stated. “There’s a tendency in mainstream medicine to direct couples towards IVF without considering RRM.” Dr. Fleming echoed this sentiment, noting that the financial incentives for recommending RRM are lacking. “Unfortunately, RRM is not very well known, and a significant reason for that is the lack of advertising,” he added, highlighting the need for increased awareness.

As the new Senate is expected to revisit the RESTORE Act, advocates for RRM are relying on personal recommendations to spread the word. “I recommend RRM to everyone I know who struggles with fertility,” Karen shared. “I’ve given out Dr. Eddie and Dr. Jean’s information because they truly helped us, and we now have our miracle baby.”

Karen and Anthony Monetti’s story illustrates the potential of restorative reproductive medicine as a viable alternative for couples facing infertility, emphasizing the importance of hope and faith in their journey.
