Top Performers Shine in Anne Arundel County High School Sports
Each week, The Capital Gazette highlights the standout performances of student-athletes from Anne Arundel County high schools. As part of the ongoing coverage, readers have the opportunity to vote for their choice of Athlete of the Week, with polls open until Friday evening.
In the previous week, Severn Run girls soccer’s Shayna Tobin garnered 23.8% of the public vote to claim the title of Athlete of the Week, surpassing Broadneck football’s Kendall Jones who received 16.2%, Broadneck field hockey’s Trish Maloney with 12.2%, and Glen Burnie cheerleading’s Kylie Outen at 11.9%.
This week’s top performances feature a range of sports and impressive achievements.
Notable Achievements This Week
Alex Bubnov of Key High School made a remarkable comeback from an early-season injury, scoring a hat trick in the Obezags’ MIAA C Conference semifinal victory on Thursday. He also contributed to the team’s championship win on Sunday, converting one of three penalty kick goals.
From South River, Korey Warren delivered an outstanding performance in football, rushing for four touchdowns and accumulating 162 yards in a dominant 69-0 win over J.M. Bennett during the first round of the Class 3A postseason on Thursday.
In cross country, Frankie “Tre” Kelly of Severn Run made history by clinching the program’s first-ever state title, winning the Class 4A boys 5K race with a time of 16:09.27.
Severna Park’s Sofi Weber showcased her skills in field hockey, scoring the decisive goal in a double overtime semifinal victory against Winston Churchill. She followed this with a crucial goal in the Class 4A state final against Leonardtown on Saturday.
Additional Standouts
In boys soccer, Teo LaPointe from Key High School proved to be a vital player, making seven key saves during the MIAA C Conference championship, including an essential stop during penalty kicks.
Janae Woodward, a junior cheerleader from Broadneck, played a significant role in securing the program’s first-ever state title at the Class 4A state championships on Saturday.
In cross country, Lexi Fitzsimmons of Severna Park finished fifth overall at the Class 3A state championships, clocking in at 19:38.7 and helping her team clinch the team title.
Volleyball standout Bailey Swinton from Arundel contributed significantly in the Class 3A East I Region final with nine kills, three aces, and six digs. She later tallied 14 kills, an ace, and 28 digs in the Class 3A state quarterfinal against Wootton.
Lastly, Ava Scott of Severna Park scored the game-winning goal against Towson, leading her team to the state championships, while Niaya Brezial from Severn Run demonstrated exceptional athleticism and defensive skills in the historic Class 4A state semifinal debut on Saturday.
