Scottish Brothers Break World Record for Fastest Pacific Row

Three Scottish brothers, Jamie, Ewan, and Lachlan Maclean, have set a new world record for the fastest unsupported row across the Pacific Ocean. On March 2, 2024, the trio completed their remarkable journey in just 139 days, arriving in Cairns, Australia, after rowing more than 9,000 miles non-stop from Peru. They are now the first team to successfully achieve the full crossing from South America to Australia.
The Maclean brothers faced numerous challenges during their journey, including treacherous storms, seasickness, and injuries. One particularly harrowing incident saw Lachlan swept overboard by a violent wave. Despite these obstacles, the brothers remained determined, raising over £700,000 (approximately $945,690) for clean water projects, with a target of £1 million (around $1,350,450).
As they approached Cairns Marlin Marina, the brothers celebrated their achievement by playing the bagpipes and waving flags representing Scotland, Australia, and the United Kingdom. A crowd of over 50 family members, supporters, and fans, including their mother Sheila, warmly welcomed them upon their arrival.
In the hours leading up to their landing, Ewan shared a lighthearted video message, humorously inquiring, “Do you have pizza and beer? I repeat, do you have pizza and beer? Over.” Reflecting on the grueling journey, the 33-year-old described it as the hardest experience of his life, one that he could not have undertaken without his siblings. “We’ve shed tears of joy and laughed till our cheeks hurt,” Ewan said.
Middle brother Jamie, 31, noted that as they neared the end of their journey, their situation became dire. “We seriously thought we might run out of food,” he recalled. The experience profoundly impacted the brothers, giving them a new perspective on life and resilience.
Looking ahead, the Macleans plan to continue their fundraising efforts through their charity, the Maclean Foundation. They aim to fund clean water projects that will benefit 40,000 people living in Madagascar.
The Maclean brothers have eclipsed the previous record for the fastest full, unassisted, nonstop Pacific row, which was set by Russian solo rower Fyodor Konyukhov in 2014 at 160 days. Their achievement is not only a testament to their endurance but also highlights the importance of community support and charitable efforts.
