Retired Maj. Gen. Joseph McNeil, Greensboro 4 Member, Passes Away

Retired Major General Joseph McNeil, a prominent figure in the American civil rights movement and a member of the Greensboro 4, has died at the age of 83. His passing was confirmed on Thursday by the International Civil Rights Museum, which he helped to establish. McNeil’s death occurred on the night of October 4, 2023, as reported by Earl Jones, a co-founder of the museum.
Legacy of Courage and Change
McNeil was one of four students from North Carolina A&T State University who, on February 1, 1960, made history by staging a sit-in at the segregated lunch counter of the downtown F.W. Woolworth Store in Greensboro, North Carolina. Accompanying him were Jibreel Khazan, formerly known as Ezell Blair Jr., the late David Richmond, and the late Franklin McCain. Their courageous act of defiance served as a catalyst for the broader civil rights movement across the United States.
During the annual observance of the sit-in’s anniversary in February 2023, McNeil was the only surviving member of the original group present at the event. Despite facing health challenges, he engaged with attendees, expressing gratitude for his presence with a warm smile, stating, “I’m blessed to be here.”
Remembering a Trailblazer
The Greensboro 4’s sit-in was a pivotal moment in the struggle against racial segregation, inspiring similar protests throughout the country. McNeil’s activism not only challenged the status quo but also contributed to significant legislative changes regarding civil rights.
As a retired Major General, McNeil’s influence extended beyond civil rights activism into his military career, where he served with distinction. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations who strive for equality and justice.
McNeil’s contributions to society were recognized not just through his actions but also through his role in education and mentorship, fostering a spirit of activism among young people. His passing marks the end of an era, but his impact on civil rights and social justice remains indelible.
The community and those influenced by his work will remember McNeil not only for his significant role in the civil rights movement but also for his kindness and dedication to making the world a better place.
