Parents Concerned as Son’s Lifestyle Changes with New Relationship

Parents express concern over their 23-year-old son, Ed, whose lifestyle has changed dramatically since he began dating Emily. Once dedicated to fitness and maintaining a clean appearance, Ed now seems less focused on his health and grooming habits, raising alarm for his family.
Ed’s parents, who are in their 60s and pride themselves on a healthy lifestyle, have noticed significant alterations in their son’s routine. Previously a regular at the gym and mindful of his diet, Ed now appears to have lost interest in working out. His parents feel that Emily’s influence may be contributing to this shift. They describe her as being significantly overweight and lacking basic hygiene, with instances of her underwear being left in common areas of their home.
In a letter to the advice column “Dear Abby,” Ed’s mother expressed her worries about the relationship. “This is not who we are as a family,” she stated. After discovering Emily’s lingerie on multiple occasions, she feels compelled to address the situation. She is uncertain whether she should speak to Ed directly or if it would be more effective for his father to have that conversation.
Abby, the advice columnist, responded by encouraging Ed’s mother to reconsider placing the blame solely on Emily for Ed’s changes. She emphasized that Ed is ultimately responsible for his choices. “Your son is making those changes himself,” Abby remarked, suggesting that it might be more appropriate for his father to address the issue of hygiene and cleanliness.
In a separate letter, another reader, who identifies as “Wondering in Washington,” sought guidance on whether to disclose a past secret about her marriage. After the passing of her husband, who she was married to for 56 years, she reflected on their elopement in Las Vegas when they were just 19 and 22 years old, prior to their formal wedding in California.
With two adult daughters, she is torn about whether to reveal the existence of their Las Vegas marriage certificate, which she still possesses. Abby reassured her that there is no shame in a young couple eloping for love. She suggested that keeping the certificate under lock and key might be a better option than destroying it, as it remains a legal document.
The advice shared in these letters highlights the complexities of relationships and the impact they can have on individual identities. As Ed navigates his relationship with Emily, his parents hope to encourage a dialogue that respects both his autonomy and their family values. Similarly, “Wondering in Washington” contemplates the legacy of her marriage and the secrets that can shape family narratives.
