Local band directors from Lorain County, Ohio, will participate in the prestigious Rose Bowl Parade on January 1, 2026. This group includes Jennifer Smercina of Clearview Local Schools, Dustin Wiley from Firelands Schools, Angelo Kortyka and Shelli Boes representing Lorain City Schools, and Kristoffer Hudson of Open Door Christian School. They will join a large assembly of band directors marching under the theme, “America’s band directors: We teach music. We teach life.”

The band directors are scheduled to arrive in Pasadena, California, on December 28, 2025, to prepare for the event. “I’m incredibly proud to represent my family, Clearview Schools, and the state of Ohio in the Rose Parade,” Smercina remarked. She emphasized the transformative power of music, stating, “Marching in the Rose Parade is an honor and a privilege; it’s a celebration of every student I’ve taught and the power of music to connect and inspire all of us.”

Wiley echoed this sentiment, expressing his excitement about participating. “I am honored to be a part of the Saluting America’s Band Directors Marching Band, representing the Firelands School District in such a prestigious event,” he said. He added, “As a music teacher, it has always been my goal to share music with as many as I can, and what better way than in front of millions at the Rose Parade.”

The Saluting America’s Band Directors project gathers band directors from across North America, recognizing their extraordinary dedication and accomplishments. The band will comprise over 300 directors who will march alongside a vibrant float through the 5.5-mile parade route.

Celebrating the Impact of Music Education

Smercina highlighted the influence these educators have had throughout their careers, noting, “These professionals, not only teach and conduct music, they teach about life itself.” The project aims to honor the collective efforts of music educators who have mentored and taught hundreds of thousands of students.

Leading the band will be Jon Waters, a nationally recognized music educator known for his innovative approach to band direction. He will conduct rehearsals and performances while in Pasadena, ensuring a memorable experience for all participants.

The initiative is sponsored by the Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation, based in Pickerington, Ohio. This foundation honors the late Mike Sewell, who dedicated 40 years to enhancing school and community music programs in Pickerington and the surrounding region. The foundation’s work reflects a commitment to preserving the legacy of music education, which continues to inspire generations of students.

As the event approaches, the excitement among the band directors and their communities grows, showcasing the vital role of music education in shaping lives and fostering connections.
