A lifelong supporter of Manchester City has announced he will no longer watch the team due to comments made by manager Pep Guardiola regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Paul Hamburger, a member of the Jewish community and a fan since childhood, expressed his feelings of betrayal over what he perceives as anti-Israel rhetoric from Guardiola.

Hamburger, who has supported Manchester City since the age of three, detailed his long-standing dedication to the club, recalling moments from his bar mitzvah to shared family experiences at matches. “I feel betrayed, to be honest,” he stated. His discontent stems from Guardiola’s recent comments, in which the manager accused Israel of committing genocide.

In a letter to the club, Hamburger emphasized that Guardiola’s statements could contribute to rising antisemitism in the UK. He urged the club to consider its diverse fanbase, stating, “There are Jewish fans at the club, and what he is saying is basically spreading a false narrative.” Despite his efforts, Hamburger reported receiving no response from Manchester City regarding his concerns.

He has since taken a firm stance, declaring, “I haven’t watched one minute of Man City this season.” His commitment to abstaining from matches extends to television broadcasts and social media. “Because of how Pep is behaving and because of the club’s response to that, I truly feel betrayed… I am gutted,” he added. Hamburger believes that the club, which has a rich Jewish heritage, lacks appreciation for the contributions of its Jewish supporters.

Guardiola made his controversial remarks during an interview with the Spanish radio station RAC1 ahead of a friendly match between Catalonia and Palestine. He stated, “Every time I imagine what is happening to the people of Palestine, it’s that the whole world has left them alone.” Guardiola went on to highlight the suffering of the Palestinian people, drawing attention to the severity of the situation in Gaza.

The manager’s comments have sparked significant debate, particularly in light of his previous statements. In June, during an honorary degree acceptance speech from the University of Manchester, Guardiola spoke about the need for awareness regarding the situation in Gaza, urging people to “refuse to be silent and still when it matters most.”

In light of the controversy, Hamburger’s sentiments reflect a broader concern within the fanbase regarding how the club engages with sensitive political issues. The impact of Guardiola’s statements on Jewish fans and the club’s historical connection to the Jewish community remains a significant topic of discussion.

The Jewish Chronicle reached out to Manchester City for a statement regarding the situation, but no comment has been provided at this time. As the debate continues, Hamburger remains resolute in his stance, stating, “I won’t watch another game until the club addresses this.”
