Chengdu Innovator Launches Fleet of Flying Sword Drones
A technology enthusiast from Chengdu, China, has successfully developed a fleet of flying sword-shaped drones, blending traditional martial arts with modern technology. Since November 2024, Fan Shisan, a local tech blogger and influencer, has been pioneering a motion-sensing system that allows him to control multiple drones using only hand gestures. This innovative project has captured the imagination of many and sparked discussions about future applications of drone technology.
Fan has a notable history in combining drones with martial arts themes. Earlier this year, he gained significant attention by creating a giant rideable sword drone, showcasing his ingenuity and dedication to this unique niche. Each of his flying swords is equipped with propellers and advanced motion controls, enabling them to respond to his commands as they hover and maneuver in the air.
In an interview with People’s Daily, Fan explained the technical challenges he encountered during the development of the flying swords. “Initially, we used 20 ducted fans, but the thrust wasn’t enough. We added four more, which gave us the power we needed, and that’s how the ‘flying sword’ you see in the video became a reality,” he stated. This meticulous approach to engineering has led to the creation of a visually captivating display of technology and artistry.
Fan’s passion for swords extends beyond drones. He holds two Guinness World Records: one for the fastest time to slice five pieces of A4 paper in mid-air, achieved in 7.46 seconds, and another for the quickest time to carve through ten watermelons using a martial-arts blade. His achievements reflect not only his skill but also his commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in swordplay.
As he looks to the future, Fan has set an ambitious goal: to create a synchronized swarm of “ten thousand swords as one.” This vision echoes the legendary themes often found in traditional wuxia literature, where martial artists wield extraordinary powers and command incredible feats. The concept of a unified swarm of flying swords represents a blend of fantasy and technological innovation, capturing the spirit of traditional Chinese culture while embracing modern advancements.
The flying sword project has sparked interest not only among tech enthusiasts but also within the broader cultural landscape. As more people become aware of Fan’s work, it raises questions about the intersection of technology and traditional practices. Could such innovations lead to new forms of entertainment or even applications in robotics and automation?
The rapid development of flying drones shaped like swords demonstrates the potential for creative expression through technology. Fan Shisan’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how passion and innovation can converge to create extraordinary experiences. As he continues to refine his designs and pursue his vision, the world watches with anticipation, eager to see what he will achieve next in the realm of flying blades.
