On Saturday morning, the non-profit organization Back the Blue NC organized a 5K run in Raleigh, North Carolina, to honor fallen law enforcement officers. The event, known as the Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Honor Run, attracted participants from various law enforcement agencies and the local community, all dedicated to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

This year, North Carolina has mourned the loss of two law enforcement members: Officer Gabriel Stainback, a Cornelius police officer killed by a vehicle while off duty, and Detention Officer Francisco Paul Flattes, who passed away on June 30, 2025. The run serves as a poignant reminder of their sacrifices and the sacrifices of many others who have served the state.

Community Support and Solidarity

During the event, attendees shared their sentiments regarding the importance of supporting families who lose loved ones in law enforcement. Samantha Powelson, daughter of a retired police officer, expressed the need for community backing, stating, “I feel like any family that loses a loved one, especially for a career choice, protecting and serving the community needs all the support they can get.”

The 5K route began and ended on Law Enforcement Drive, winding through various local roads, including Battle Bridge Road and Victory Lane. The community’s participation was evident, with dozens of deputies, officers, and civilians coming together to honor those who have fallen.

U.S. Marshal Glen McNeil, who has attended numerous memorials for fallen officers, shared his experience: “I had the unfortunate occurrence of burying quite a few North Carolina state troopers. So, to be here for this honor roll and to celebrate our fallen, it’s an honor for me to participate.” His dedication reflects the deep connections within the law enforcement community.

Recognizing Law Enforcement on National Police Officer Day

The timing of the event coincided with National Police Officer Day, amplifying its significance. Lindsay Licausi, founder and CEO of Back the Blue NC, encouraged the public to show appreciation for local law enforcement, emphasizing their commitment to community safety: “They do truly put their lives on the line to help the community.”

The Honor Run also serves as a tribute to Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd, whose killer recently pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and received a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Deputy Andrew Staton reflected on this event, expressing relief that the legal process was concluded: “I feel like we can hopefully stop focusing on the death of Byrd, as tragic as it was, and hopefully start focusing more on his life.” Staton highlighted Byrd’s positive impact and the legacy he leaves behind.

Back the Blue NC aims to provide continued support to the families of fallen officers. Licausi noted, “That family is left without their loved ones. So what we do is we step in to assist financially. And 100% of the proceeds from our nonprofit go to assist the families of the fallen.”

The organization plays a vital role in fostering a supportive environment for families grappling with loss. As Powelson remarked, “Coming from a law enforcement family, it’s a great organization that helps support law enforcement. And it’s such a tight-knit community.”

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, a total of 630 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty in North Carolina since 1827, with causes ranging from gunfire and traffic accidents to assaults and job-related illnesses. The Honor Run serves as a reminder of their sacrifices and the enduring commitment to protecting communities.
